RUBY WALSH MAGIC: SHAMROCK looks back at the BETDAQ in-running story of the season so far with Killultagh Vic’s astonishing win at Leopardstown.
“He’ll never recover from that” – a perfectly reasonable comment from racecourse commentator Dessie Scahill after Killultagh Vic’s astonishing blunder at the final fence in the novice chase at Leopardstown yesterday (see At The Races video below).
It turned out to be the BETDAQ in-running story of the season so far with layers anxious to take rapid advantage of the blunder from the 2/7 favourite.
What unfolded though was truly miraculous from Ruby Walsh as he not only recovered but got Killultagh Vic back in front to win going away !!
Walsh modestly said after the race: “I think he’s a little bit of a forgotten horse in our yard – his form is rock-solid.”
Winning trainer Willie Mullins said: “That was extraordinary from both horse and rider. I thought he was gone and a lot of lads would have pulled him up. Ruby said when he gave him a squeeze he took off and was going to the fence too fast. To do what he did, you wouldn’t believe that could happen. I thought Ruby was going to go out the side-door and it’s harder to ride with one iron than without the both – certainly Ruby’s experience paid off.”
“That performance was good enough to run in the Arkle but he’s possibly more likely to go for the JLT.”
