WINNING NAP ON GRAND NATIONAL SATURDAY: SHAMROCK now looks ahead to the three big races at Leopardstown. The meeting at Tramore has been called off.

The (VERY) rare move of napping a treble paid off yesterday with the three good things obliging on Grand National Day but the BETDAQ MULTIPLES treble only added up to evens so I can’t shout as much as DAQMAN who superbly landed the 33/1 winner (50 on BETDAQ) in his net !!

Like a lot of people I thought I was in major trouble with Yorkhill but thankfully the remaining two selections gave me less grey hairs. Just how good is Thistlecrack by the way ? Awesome performance.

The Tramore card has been washed away today. Heavy rain overnight forced officials to call off the seven-race card that was due to feature the Listed At The Races Chase.

The course are also scheduled to race tomorrow. The Irish Turf Club’s press officer Cliff Noone said: “They’ve had no option but to cancel today’s meeting as the track is waterlogged in places. There’ll definitely be an inspection ahead of Monday’s meeting.”

The inspection will take place at 8am.

Three big races on the Leopardstown Sunday card featuring Guineas and Derby trials ….

2:40 Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes (Listed) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 4 runners)

The defection of Johannes Vermeer puts a different complexion on the race and I’m now firmly with True Solitaire who bids to win this race for a third time for Dermot Weld. I’ve been saying for a while about the great start to the season that Weld has made so True Solitaire shouldn’t lack in fitness. He was only pipped a short head by Port Douglas in the Group 2 Beresford last season at the Curragh so undoubtedly has the class but this race hasn’t proved a great trial – despite the title.

Godolphin’s Stenographer won well enough on debut at the Curragh over six furlongs but the close up third Sufoof has reappeared and was again a well held third in a Curragh maiden. The form doesn’t look exceptional by any means but Stenographer should be suited by the step up in distance.

3:15 Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes (Group 3) (3yo, Class 1, 7f, 9 runners)

Alice Springs has a minimum 8lb in hand on the rest of her field based on official ratings and also has the most experience. She has solid Group form and rounded off last season with a superb close second to Catch A Glimpse in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland. The worry for me is will she be another Found who also ran well at the Breeders’ Cup but disappointed on seasonal reappearance when a well beaten odds-on favourite at the Curragh?

As such, she has to be a lay today. She’s still odds-on (JUST) at the time of writing.

3:50 P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes (Group 3) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 2f, 7 runners)

A wide open renewal but again it might pay to stick with the trainer in form Dermot Weld. Harzand has the benefit of a run – and it was a winning one at that when he won at Cork on his seasonal debut by a sensational 16 lengths. It was only a maiden but gets the heavy ground again today and he will only improve.

Moonlight Magic hasn’t been tested on ground like this but looks a smart prospect judged on his two unbeaten runs. He looks the danger.
