OAKS: BEWARE ANOTHER FILLY FOLLY

From little acorns.. Those who have plunged on Wild Illusion and Magical for Friday’s Epsom Oaks must be looking down the card for fear of yet another filly folly!

Results of the three European 1,000 Guineas leave no doubt that late developers are running past those exposed on form as if they are standing still.

Be honest, did you have any one of Teppal, Billesdon Brook and Alpha Centauri in your notebook for the trio of one-mile Classics?

12-1 Teppal David Simcock’s filly started it all 15 days ago when she beat the three-year-old belles of France in their 1,000 Guineas (Poule d’Essai des Pouliches) at ParisLongchamp.

It was her first run back with only a couple of autumn AW wins on her CV, and her pedigree said she was half-sister to Group-placed sprinters.

66-1 Billesdon Brook Richard Hannon’s Nell Gwyn fourth, who’d won a nursery at Goodwood as a juvenile, came flying through the ranks to win the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas and the runner-up, Laurens, rubbed French faces in it yesterday, taking the Group-1 Prix Saint-Alary.

12-1 Alpha Centauri In the Irish 1,000 at the Curragh, a four-filly defence by Aidan O’Brien was slammed by another outsider, Jessica Harrington’s grey, Alpha Centauri, half-sister to Listed winners only.

She’d been beaten by both Happily (third yesterday) and Who’s Steph in the Moyglare and the 1,000 trial at Leopardstown, both on deep ground. Yesterday it was good to firm.

TOMORROW: I’m bound to start my Classic countdown tomorrow, looking for another Derby and Oaks outsider.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY: ABC guides to the Oaks and the Derby.

DREAM BET AT 14.0 BETDAQ OFFERS

2.20 Leicester Here we have another bunch of fairly well exposed three-year-old fillies, and we need something that’s had the requisite three runs before this handicap debut.

Miss Mumtaz wasn’t all that quiet about it, with two seconds for another trainer, but you can expect her to improve for the switch to Ian Williams, who had two winners from three starters, Flat and jumps, yesterday.

If this is to be yet another fillies’ mile with a shock result, it could come from 14.0 BETDAQ offer Livvys Dream, better than the bare form and with

Charlie Hills and Jim Crowley having a 40% strike rate as a combo on this course.

2.55 Leicester Magical Memory and Steps, launched from this handicap, achieved Group success. Six out of 10 winners in the decade were drawn 1, 2 or 3.

The 4.2 offer Gabrial The Saint (drawn 2 but 1 stall empty) was well backed last night despite this rise in class and the 5lb swing in the weights that favours his fast-finishing Chester runner-up Mr Top Hat (BETDAQ 7.6)

Elnadim Star will appreciate the give in the ground but, though winning only a neck on the last day, has been hit with a 10lb rise, while a first-time hood needs to boost Barton Mills’ performance.

3.30 Leicester Frankie Dettori’s only bookings this week so far are Cracksman at Epsom on Frifay and this one, Photographer (BETDAQ 3.45), in a lowly class-3 novice stakes.

Closely related to an Irish Derby winner, Photographer led a bit soon under Robert Havlin on the last day and was pipped at Newcastle by a subsequent Thirsk winner.

Havlin now switches to Raa Atoll, another progressive sort, also being tested at 1m 4f for the first time.

Saeed Bin Suroor has a strike-rate of 67 per cent with his first-time-out three-year-olds at Leicester, and today he saddles Recordman (3.30), big at 8.8.

HERE’S THE STORY OF REDCAR GOLD

4.10 Redcar (Zetland Gold Cup) Off 19lb better than his AW handicap rating, it was no surprise when Abareeq finally got off the mark on turf on the last day.

He’s up two grades and 8lb in weight today but has a good draw in gate 4 in a race his stable has won for two of the last three seasons.

Also up in trip and rating is Big Country, and Leader’s Legacy’s only defeat since last Spring (three wins from four) was in the Britannia at Royal Ascot but he’s drawn a high stall here.

Dual 7f winner at the start and finish of last season, What’s The Story (BETDAQ 8.2, out of gate 2) should relish the step up to 1m 2f today. There’s bags of stamina in his pedigree.

4.50 Windsor Midsummer Knight drops back in trip, after failing by a length to make all in this grade at Newmarket over 6f. Third and fourth had both won races this Spring.

He will get 18lb from Koditime, for whom the worry is the bounce factor after his recent winning reappearance after a long absence.
