THOMAS HAS ENGINE FOR FENCES
1.30 Kempton A decent contest in which the percentage call on the embryonic chasers has to be Thomas Darby.
The Olly Murphy trained runner has plenty of class as he showed when finishing second in the Supreme at Cheltenham and although sent off an odds-on favourite for his chasing debut at Warwick couldn’t peg back Maire Banrigh. There was no disgrace in that effort as the winner was completing a four-timer and hopefully Thomas Darby will have learnt plenty.
I say percentage call as there are big question marks over his rivals. Who Dares Wins is having his first jumps start for nearly 600 days and surely needs a longer trip than this to show his best form whilst Master Tommytucker fell on his only chase start to date at Chepstow when still going well but raced with plenty of enthusiasm so it’s no surprise to see trainer Paul Nicholls apply a hood.
2.05 Kempton (Listed Mares Hurdle) A Monday bonus of a Listed contest at Kempton and with the exception of Hawthorn Cottage it looks a tricky puzzle.
BETDAQ favourite at the time of writing is Annie Mc who finished last season on a high when winning the Mares’ Final at Newbury in easy style. She’s only a five-year-old so there might be further improvement to come and although she took a couple of runs last season before showing her best form her trainer Jonjo O’Neill has his string fairly well forward (4 wins in last 14 days) and she can make a winning start to the new campaign.
Official ratings suggest she and Culture De Sivola are at the same level. The Nick Williams trained, Lizzie Kelly ridden mare has the benefit of a run this season when she was third at Uttoxeter last month and could come on plenty for that but her winning form to date has all come with give in the ground and it’s forecast good going at Kempton this afternoon.
A bigger danger may emerge from Papagana who bolted home to win a Listed race at Doncaster last time out in March on good ground. She isn’t far behind on the ratings and if showing that level on her seasonal reappearance should go close but it’s a fairly big ‘if’ as she has always been better with a run under her belt.
3.40 Kempton This could be best left to the David Pipe trained Story Of Friends who makes his handicap debut and is having his first start since wind surgery.
He was chasing a hat-trick at Newton Abbot but was no match for the long odds-on Thebannerkingrebel
who won a Listed contest at Haydock at the weekend.
This doesn’t look the harshest of marks for Story Of Friends and Jonjo O’Neill jnr in the saddle is another positive.
DAQMAN’S BETS (all staked to win 10 points)
BET 10.0pts win (nap) THOMAS DARBY (1.30 Kempton)
BET 3.5pts win ANNIE MC (2.05 Kempton)
BET 2.4pts win STORY OF FRIENDS (3.40 Kempton)
