It’s a wonderful race. There’s so many brilliant angles to enjoy about it and we’ve picked our top three renewals from recent years..

3️⃣ 2015. Winner: Gleneagles

Gleneagles won easily in 2015, and went on to complete the Guineas double at the Curragh a couple of weeks afterwards. He landed the St James’s Palace stakes at Royal Ascot too and he looked like he had the world at his feet but unfortunately he was never the same after a setback. Up until then, he was only “officially” beaten at Longchamp when he was first past the post but lost the race in the stewards room. He was an excellent two-year-old and a very classy winner of the 2000 Guineas on his first start as a three-year-old.

When Ryan really said one with a furlong to go, he put distance between himself and his rivals and he was going away even further at the line. Ballydoyle have won the 2000 Guineas in 2017, 2018 and 2019 – but you have to feel that the last winner that the stable felt was the real deal was Gleneagles.

2️⃣  2013. Winner: Dawn Approach

This was a very impressive win and what a season we had between Dawn Approach and Toronado. Unfortunately Dawn Approach went down the Derby route and finished last, but he bounced back to win the St James’s Palace stakes at Ascot, only to lose to Toronado at Glorious Goodwood. The battles between them were special that season, with every angle covered by the media and racing lovers. Goodwood was always likely to suit Toronado more, but Dawn Approach was a real battler who had plenty of class.

He was much the best on 2000 Guineas where he put in a very classy performance. The results was never really in doubt from the two furlong pole. And then when they hit the hill he took off again. You can see why they went for the Derby, but unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be. He proven himself to be a top quality miler after.

1️⃣ 2011. Winner: Frankel

How could you pick your favourite 2000 Guineas moments from recent years and not have Frankel at the top? This performance was out of this world. It’s something we’ll probably never see the likes of again at Newmarket. It was incredible. It’s still incredible that they couldn’t keep up with him so quickly in the race – he had it won after two furlongs!

Surely some in-running punters thought at the time that he was going too quickly too early, but to be nearly ten lengths clear at halfway is just stunning. What else can we say? This was one of the very best horse racing performances we’ll see for a very long time.
