FAVOURITE TO OPPOSE: GALMOY AGAIN HOLDS THE FESTIVAL KEY: Another week and Daqman picks a race to savour ahead of Cheltenham trials day on Saturday. It’s the Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park on Thursday. Could it produce an outsider for the festival in March? Whatever, Daqman reckons it highlights another in his series of favourites to oppose.
MONDAY BETS: DAQMAN keeps the stakes low with three all-weather bets. Plumpton now need to pass a 12pm inspection after two earlier looks proved inconclusive.
SHARK IN TOP CHELTENHAM SWIMS
⭕ 2.20 Gowran Park, Thursday (Galmoy Hurdle) Willie Mullins last year launched the seemingly unbeatable Benie Des Dieux (8-8 still standing) from her Galmoy victory to the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham.
But she was blown away at the festival by Honeysuckle, now herself unbeaten with a similar sequence (9-9).
Honeysuckle (4.2 ante-post in the BETDAQ orange for this year’s race), Benie Des Dieux (9.6) and Saturday’s star, Roksana (8.8), could all meet in the Mares Hurdle this time around.
But, while he missed out with Benie, Willie won the Mares Novices with Concertista, who last night led the BETDAQ market (3.5) for the 2021 Mares Hurdle over those three after winning at Fairyhouse and Leopardstown in the autumn.
I can’t see it myself. Her autumn victories have not been franked, and the runner-up in the Mares Novices, Dolcita, flopped 14 lengths in November when switched to Paul Nicholls and has since moved on again to Fergal O’Brien.
Dolcita was well beaten at Cheltenham; even so, the offers in the orange of 3.5 Concertista and 42.0 Dolcita for March tell you that something’s wrong with the margins.
And the Galmoy could change everything again. Mullins has five of the 13 probables for Thursday, all bar one aged eight or more.
The odd one out, still only seven so the potential improver, is Great White Shark, who will be getting 7lb from everything in the race, and is currently a huge 29.0 for the Mares Hurdle, and also engaged in the Stayers Hurdle.
I can’t believe we will see any fireworks from other well-known faces of Willie’s in the Galmoy – Bacardys, Bapaume, Scarpeta and Burrows Saint – so Great White Shark has to be the one.
Third in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham, and Guinness Hurdle winner at her favourite track, Galway, the Great grey finished 2020 by taking the Cesarewitch at Newmarket.
She only has to run well for her 14-1 and 16-1 with bookmakers to look good in yet another Cheltenham alternative, the Coral Cup handicap.
I can’t tell you which race she will run in (neither can W. Mullins at this stage!) but she seems to have been so overlooked that I shall buy a bit of those fancy odds, even the 29.0 with BETDAQ, in advance of Thursday’s outcome.
BRIDGE NOT TOO FAR
⭕ 1.10 Chelmsford The opener at Chelmsford should see Jumira Bridge bring up the hat-trick and defy the statutory 4lb penalty for his smooth win over this trip at Wolverhampton last week.
He justified favouritism that day winning by two and three quarter lengths and it’s no surprise to see trainer Derek Shaw get him out again quickly before the handicapper deals a blow likely to be in excess of 4lb.
Whilst this is the same grade of race – it looks more competitive at face value. The big danger (who helps make the price for us on BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE) is likely to come from the ever reliable Sir Hector who seldom runs a bad race but has yet to win off a mark of 60+.
Vape comes into this on the back of two contrasting runs at Southwell but would have place chances on the back of his previous close up third to Phoenix Star at Kempton.
SPEED BUST UP SUIT ZAMAANI?
⭕ 6.15 Kempton This class 2 sprint stands out on an otherwise moderate Monday card at Kempton but it has also attracted the smallest field of the night with just five runners chasing down the £11,000 prize to the winner.
The hard horse to weigh up is the Mark Johnston trained Bravado who is now unbeaten in three starts – making all to win his last two.
He has something to find on the ratings and is up in class but further progress certainly can’t be ruled out.
The safer percentage play might be Zamaani who is closely matched with Mighty Gurkha on Wolverhampton form from December.
However, Mighty Gurkha also likes to race from the front so there could easily be a burn up between him and Bravado which might well set up the race for a closer like Zamaani.
ZEE FOR NIGHTCAP
⭕ 8.15 Kempton The final race on the card can go to Mr Zee who relished course and distance when winning easily by four lengths earlier in the month.
The excellent Laura Pearson (who gave us a nice winner with Catch My Breath yesterday) takes over in the saddle and the combination should prove hard to beat despite being higher in the weights.
Almost You makes her UK debut having shown, in the main, modest form in France.
DAQMAN’S BETS (staked to win 10 points)
BET 5.4pts win (nap) JUMIRA BRIDGE (1.10 Chelmsford)
BET 2.5pts win ZAMAANI (6.15 Kempton)
BET 4.5pts win MR ZEE (8.15 Kempton)
What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
