WEEK AHEAD: It’s a feast of football this week with several big ties to look out for
Starting on Monday, after the early hours NFL action, it’s goals to look out for rather than touchdowns, when high-flying Brighton face Crystal Palace at 20:00pm.
On Tuesday the Champions League takes centre stage. Both Liverpool and Manchester City are on the road, with the Reds on paper having the easier task as they travel to Portugal to take on Porto. City will be tested by PSG, in what looks a fascinating meeting between Lionel Messi and old boss Pep Guardiola.
On Wednesday it’s the turn of Chelsea, who take on Juventus in a clash that should go some way to deciding the winners of Group H. Manchester United suffered a surprising loss to Young Boys in their first group game and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will be determined to get three points on the board against Villareal. All games are live across the BT Sport network from 20:00.
On Thursday, golf begins from 09:00 with the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the only annual competition to be held at the Old Course, St Andrews. European football action continues, with five British teams in action in the Europa League. Leicester City play Legia Warsaw away, in a 17:45 kick off. While there will be no love lost between Rangers as they face a Slavia Prague team that knocked them out of the Europa League last season. In the later 20:00 kick-offs, Tottenham should have a straightforward task against Slovenian minnows NS Mura, while London rivals West Ham host Rapid Vienna. Celtic are the final team in action when Bayer Leverkusen visit Parkhead. Across the pond, action on the PGA Tour begins with the Sanderson Farms Championship, live on Sky Sports from 20:00. The golf continues on Friday and leads into a big weekend of sport.
Will Ronaldo get on the scoresheet once again? That must be the question on most people’s lips when Manchester United face Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday (12:30, BT Sport). There’s a big game for Rugby Union fans to looks forward to when newly promoted Saracens face a challenge against Leicester Tigers. In a 17:30 kick-off, Arsenal travel to the south coast to face Brighton, while later Saturday evening there are some big boxing bouts from the SSE Arena, London, with the prize-fight being Chris Eubank Jr against German Sven Elbir.
Sunday morning hits the spot with the Darts Grand Prix live from 09:00 on Sky Sports, while the final round from St Andrews also begins. In the Scottish Premiership, Aberdeen could give Celtic a fright at Pittodrie. Then it’s the turn of Crystal Palace and Leicester City before what is a fitting climax to the week from Anfield when Liverpool host Manchester City at 16:30.
