KING GEORGE CLASH OF FOUR CHAMPIONS: It’s the King George at Ascot, with stats and form already published in the Daqman column on Wednesday, leading to his 1-2-3 verdict today, as four champions clash.
KING KEANE CAN BOWL THEM OVER
⭕ 3.35 Ascot (King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, 1m 4f, Group 1) You can look at the four-star King George four different ways: on prizemoney won, Mishriff, is almost pulling double over the total take of the rest of the field.
On the stats, the absence of a four-year-old leaves the top second-season pair, Emily Upjohn and Westover, with the race at their mercy.
But the only champion of champions in the race is the Arc de Triomphe winner, Torquator Tasso.
Look to the ratings to settle it and you open the race right up again. Granting the three-year-olds their allowance at face value, it’s 131 both Emily Upjohn and Westover, 125 Mishriff, 123 Torquator Tasso at level weights.
If Epsom Derby winner Desert Crown were in the field, he would be my choice, but we won’t see him now until towards the end of the season (he’s still not 100% and misses the York International).
1: WESTOVER hampered behind Desert Crown at Epsom but took his Classic honours well in the Irish Derby. Colin Keane is 0-46 at Ascot but no way can you break up the partnership of that Curragh victory.
Keane couldn’t be in better form after a four-timer at Down Royal yesterday, while Frankie Dettori (currently 1-14) is down again, after losing the Goodwood Cup ride on Stradivarius.
2: Emily Upjohn Is this redemption day at last for Dettori? The filly’s stumble and too-late chasing of Tuesday in the Epsom Oaks was the start of his ‘mensis horribilis’, nightmare month of Royal Ascot demise.
Emily gets the filly’s allowance but it bothers me when any horse is switched to a new target (travel problems out of Brexit Britain cost her the Irish Oaks).
Strictly, after Tuesday’s 10-length defeat by Westover in the Irish Derby, Emily has no chance of beating Westover today but Tuesday didn’t show her true running at the Curragh.
3: Torquator Tasso The 72-1 SP labelled his Arc win a fluke but his form afterwards, and that of his earlier Berlin conqueror, Alpinista. have proved otherwise.
The last shock Arc win by a German horse was followed up in the King George when Danedream was also ignored in the market. Would prefer cut in the ground or I’d have him in second place.
4: Mishriff Second to Adayar in the King George but seems to be yesterday’s man, 5 Broome, 6 Pyledriver.
BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE Both Emily Upjohn and Westover are Fortune Cookies, which are settled at level stakes. But for betting purposes today, I shall vary the stakes to win 20 each at 2.69 Westover and 4.4 Emily Upjohn.
DETTORI TO GET FLYER ON LEZOO
⭕ 1.50 Ascot (Princess Margaret Stakes, 6f 2yo fillies, Group 3) Besharah (2015) and Zain Claudette (2021) went on from winning this to take the Lowther Stakes.
Royal Charter, from the Besharah stable, was her stable’s first two-year-old winner in June. They’ve only had one more from 14 runners!
If you are happy following Frankie Dettori again, Lezoo’s credentials are pretty good, 2-2 and then narrowly beaten by the Albany runner-up, Mawj, on the July Course. Clear in the BETDAQ market at 2.72 this morning.
Palm Lily looked sure to run in the Albany but has swerved all engagements since scoring at Kempton on the first day of June.
Cuban Mistress split the Windsor Castle runner-up and the Super Sprint winner at Sandown on the first day of July.
Two weeks earlier, she’d run up to Lezoo at Bath, giving 6lb, so she should be able to get a place today, and offers are too big at 31.0 (and 6.5 the place).
7.5 NOVEMBA IS THE VALUE BET
⭕ 2.25 Ascot (Valiant Stakes, 1m fillies and mares Group 3) It’s 3-y-o 5 and 4-y-o 5, with the favourite only 20%.
Novemba was supported early for this as she drops a grade after her Group-2 fourth at Royal Ascot, but her best form – third at the Arc meeting last October – is on the soft.
Zanbaq was hampered near the finish of a handicap at the royal meeting, just failing to stop the winner, Heredia, landing a four-timer.
Since then, an odds-on Heredia, has finished a length down on Oscula at Sandown, though receiving 3lb., and Snooze N You Lose was held nearly five lengths by Oscula at Carlisle (7f), though the third, Eldikos, stayed on well.
Jumbly ran in both French and German 1,000 Guineas, not beaten far, after running second in the Fred Darling (7f).
Kind Gesture made all and won by a wide margin at Windsor but this is much higher class, and she’s needed a hood to start scoring.
A very hard race for punting, but the market is convinced that a fast pace from either or both of Jumbly or Novemba will set it up for Zanbaq, who flew out of the pack at Royal Ascot, only to be hampered near the finish.

TACTICAL TOO BIG AT BETDAQ 19.0
⭕ 3.00 Ascot (7f class-2 handicap) Jumby, first-time cheekpieces but low drawn, is not to be confused with Jumbly in the race before.
Jumby has won over 6f and 7f and was third in both the Wokingham and the Bunbury Cup, won by Bless Him with Ropey Guest second at weights similar to today’s.
Dark Shift is 4 out of 5, three of the four successes at Ascot, including the Royal Hunt Cup last month (for which he’s raised 6lb), when Bless Him was 7th (not clear run two out) and Aratus 10th.
Tactical failed to get a clear run from gate 23 when sixth in the Buckingham Palace Stakes over this CD, won by stall 2 from stall 6 (Ropey Guest) but Tactical today has the 2 stall which housed the winner that day!
