THE TOP TEN TWO-YEAR-OLDS

JUVENILES hitting the headlines so far with their birth month, trainer, and big-race form. Be your own judge by reprising their races and comparing their performances, looking for collateral and connecting form, and the essential ingredients for a big future: breeding, conformation, courage, scope, stamina and speed. Be your own expert: you can do it!

119 HENRY LONGFELLOW (Aidan O’Brien) January foal by Dubawi out of the Galileo mare Minding, winner of the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks. Won the Curragh tests, the Futurity and the National Stakes, extending his supremacy over the runner-up in each race, Islandsinthestream

118 CITY OF TROY (Aidan O’Brien) March foal by US Triple Crown winner Justify; Galileo dam sister to Oaks winner. Won the Superlative Stakes on the July Course at Newmarket by six lengths.

117 VANDEEK (Simon and Ed Crisford) April grey foal by Havana Grey. Richmond Stakes winner at Goodwood, ran down evens-favourite, the filly Ramatuelle, in very soft ground for the Prix Morny.

112 RAMATUELLE (Christopher Head) February filly foal by US Triple Crown winner, Justify; first foal out of Raven’s Pass mare. See Vandeek.

111 RIVER TIBER (Aidan O’Brien) February foal by Wootton Bassett, the dam producing 6f to 1m winners. Won the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot; only third to Vandeek and Ramatuelle in Morny (very soft) after missing work at home.

110 UNQUESTIONABLE (Aidan O’Brien) April foal by Wootton Bassett; dam Sea The Stars mare. Beaten a short-head by the battle-hardened Bucanero Fuerte in the Railway Stakes (6f), needing further.

109 DIEGO VELAZQUEZ (Aidan O’Brien) April foal by Frankel; related to Broome. Stablemate Capulet had no time to retaliate when he went past in the closing stages of the Champion Juvenile at Leopardstown (good).

108 CAPULET (Aidan O’Brien) April foal by US Triple Crown winner, Justify, out of a Galileo mare. Appeared to have unassailable lead until caught by the winner, Diego Velazquez, whom he overtook again soon after the line in the Champions Juvenile at Leopardstown.

109 FALLEN ANGEL (Karl Burke) March grey filly foal; progressed quickly from Group-3 Sweet Solera success to top-grade Moyglare victory at the Irish Champions Festival.

104 ELITE STATUS (Karl Burke) January foal by Havana Grey; 5f/6f winners dam’s side. Third in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and won the Cabourg at Deauville (6f) but outclassed on very soft behind Vandeek and Co in the Morny.

Elite Status (WON 1-1) was the first two-year-old runner for Fortune Cookies.

CANCEL THE DAY TRIP

⭕ 2.05 Carlisle My instinct here was to take on Adaay In Devon burdened with a double penalty for her soft ground wins at Windsor and Goodwood. Obviously it’s not impossible she wins again but the double penalties are notoriously hard to defy and she has a very interesting rival here in the shape of High Violet.

Trained by David Loughnane, High Violet made a very pleasing debut at Newbury when fourth to Queen Of Mougins on the same good to soft ground as forecast today. The winner gave the form a huge boost when going on to finish fourth in a Group 3 at Salisbury – so on pure form terms, plus taking into account expected improvement from first to second start, High Violet is entitled to give the favourite a huge race.

It’s also interesting to note the two horses that Adaay In Devon has beaten in her two recent wins have BOTH failed to win in class 5 company since.

BUCKING THE TREND

⭕ 4.00 Bath Buccabay has been running much better than his recent form figures might indicate and this looks an ideal opportunity for a first handicap win for the Eve Johnson Houghton trained runner.

An Ascot maiden winner last season, his starting handicap mark of 87 has proved too onerous but off a career low 77 today he should gain reward for some recent solid efforts including at Sandown last time out when a close up fifth in a better class event.

The Johnson Houghton stable are going well at present and he is much preferred to chief Betdaq Betting Exchange rival and fellow top weight Heroism who has a similar-ish profile having won on debut at Salisbury but latterly struggling a little off his current handicap mark.

Interesting to note he was running in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury on just his second start so hasn’t perhaps quite progressed as connections were hoping for.

GOING, GOING, GONE

⭕ 5.10 Bath Gone is a consistent sort who rattled off a hat-trick in May/June including over course and distance.

She was hiked 6lb for that sequence but is back now at a level where she can start winning again and comes into this on the back of a close second at Ripon last week. She clearly takes her racing well and certainly sets the standard in a race full of course and distance specialists.

Ciotog is a clear danger for the Loughnanes having won well here last time out the 3lb extra doesn’t look overly harsh.

At bigger odds on Betdaq I can see My Ambition going well for Denis Coakley. He has some ground to make up with Ciotog on their last meeting but for whatever reason I don’t think he ran his race that day and might be better judged on his two course and distance wins from earlier this year.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
