🇺🇸 BREEDERS CUP COUNTDOWN: Today Daqman goes deeper into the three mile-races on turf in Saturday’s Breeders Cup – the extra mile, in fact! – matching the pace and form to the draw.
BREEDERS CUP: THE EXTRA MILE
🇺🇸 10.20 Santa Anita, Friday (Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, 1m) DRAW: Stalls 2, 3, 4, 5 account for six of the nine placed in this in the last three Breeders Cups at Santa Anita.
The favourite – Roger Varian’s Daahyeh – was the only fancied horse drawn low here in 2019. William Buick, who rode the mare, expected high-drawn leaders in 11 and 12 to come back to the field.
They did but he could only split them, going second close home and not reaching the leader.
FORM and PACE: Aidan O’Brien, who won this last year with Meditate, has a pace horse here, Content, from gate 5, with Porta Fortuna (Donnacha O’Brien out of 6) taking a step up in trip and likely to be held up.
Dreamfyre (out of gate 13 in this), Buttercream Babe (from the one stall) and Flattery (2) were the first three when drawn 3, 4, 2 in a Grade 3 over the CD in early October. Flattery is better off at the weights.
Laulne (stall 4 today) is also a Grade 3 winner but Buchu (stall 3) won a class higher at Keeneland.
🇺🇸 11.40 Friday (Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf, 1m colt and geldings) DRAW Stalls 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 have had seven of the nine placings in the three Santa Anita contests for the Breeders Cup.
The Coventry Stakes winner, River Tiber (Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore), coming out of 2 on Friday, steps up in trip.
His stablemates Unquestionable (8) and Mountain Bear (12) have high draws.
PACE: Unquestionable (Frankie Dettori booked) is a keengoer, keeping on well when runner-up in the Lagardere at the Arc meeting. Mountain Bear came from the rear to score at Dundalk the last day.
🇺🇸 8.30 Saturday (Breeders Cup Mile, turf) DRAW: Master Of The Seas (Charlie Appleby) seemingly has the worst draw in 14, with Lucky Score and Du Jour in the percentage stalls 5 and 8, which have placed all three times in the last three Breeders Cups at Santa Anita.
Stall 9 (placed twice) will launch Ryan Moore on Astronomer, who led in a Grade 2 here a month back and was beaten a neck.
PACE: Both Du Jour and Master Of The Seas are rear runners and stall 14 did win this for a come-from-behind horse in 2014. On the other hand, stall 13 chased the leader in 2016 and had nothing left at the finish.
Mawj (gate 6) made all over an extra furlong in the £245k Queen Elizabeth 11 Challenge Cup at Keeneland in mid-October.
SINGS GOES FOR FOUR-TIMER
⭕ 2.38 Lingfield (6f handicap) Change Sings is 111 on AW, rising a stone in the ratings, since the beginning of August, making all a grade higher in a class-3 at Wolverhampton and getting 7f at Kempton. Looks strong at 3.2 on BETDAQ.
Razzam and Kit Gabriel (slow away) were third and fourth at this level at Wolverhampton in September, the winner then running second to Change Sings over the same CD in October.
Count Otto has a near-50% place strike-rate on AW, with seven at Lingfield among his eight wins on man-made surfaces.
He scored back-to-back on turf in July and is still on a favourable AW mark for this return to Polytrack. Too big at 16.0 on Betdaq Betting Exchange .
Cover Up won a class-5 novice, dropping back to 5f at Windsor, and cannot be ruled out.
Al Ameen may do better after wind surgery and a move to James Fanshawe paid off at Kempton three weeks back.
SERGEANT ARMS THE PUNTER
⭕ 4.15 Fakenham (2m handicap hurdle) If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. A brilliant bit of riding by Daryl Jacob cost me a 9-1 nap when he overtook me after the last on 25-1 Jetoile in the Old Roan at Aintree on Sunday.
Would he kindly restore some of my wallet with a similar ride on the quirky Sergeant Wilson for the in-form Nigel Twiston-Davis.
In fact, Daryl ‘owes’ the Southwell home guard of punters who backed Sergeant Wilson down to 10-11 favourite early last month, first run back.
Sergeant Wilson was too fresh that day on his reappearance but his exuberance has paid off on today’s track.
Sergeant Wilson ran away with a heat of the novices’ championship hurdle on this very course at Fakenham – also when favourite – in February. Pay attention, Pike! Take BETDAQ 4.3.
CARAGIO HAS TAKEN TO AW
⭕ 6.15 Kempton (7f handicap) Caragio is inviting at 6.0 on BETDAQ. Thought worthy of a crack at the Horris Hill (Group 3) as a juvenile, hit form the last day for Roger Teal, first time on Polytrack, with Hieronymous (withdrawn this morning for this) beaten four lengths.
Zero Carbon is 112 at Kempton (placed seven times from eight AW starts) but has something to find in this company.
Wild Side is 1110, finishing lame as beaten favourite the last day, and the market may tell you what to expect on her return after 125 days off.
Unexposed is Vermilion, a 16.0 offer. Winner on the Rowley Mile last September, third at Kempton under Oisin Murphy on his reappearance, but weakened out of it back at Newmarket the last day.
