There is no doubt that from a sporting perspective the summer of 2012 will live long in the memory and I think that there is every chance of us seeing a European triumph in the Ryder Cup next weekend to cap it all off.

As hosts, the United States go into the tournament as favourites, at 1.85 on BETDAQ, but Europe are the reigning champions and if they retain their title, that would mean a fifth victory in six competitions. Europe look a great price to me, at 2.55 on BETDAQ, and that’s where this week’s charity bet is going.

So many of our boys play on the PGA Tour, which should help lessen the American home advantage, and a quick look at the top of the world rankings shows three Brits – Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood – and just one American – Tiger Woods – in the top five.

McIlroy sits top of that tree and what an amazing couple of years it has been for the Northern Irishman after winning the US Open in 2011 before adding his second major just last month with a magnificent eight shot victory in the US PGA Championship. As well as being world number one, McIlroy heads both the PGA and European Tour money lists in 2012.

Captain Jose Maria Olazabal will bring something special to the European team and there is plenty of experience in his squad, with just one Ryder Cup rookie, in the shape of Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts, compared to the four in Davis Love III’s selection.

Elsewhere, there are some cracking games in the Premier League this weekend and there should be a real feast served up on Sunday.

In the early kick off I think Liverpool can take something from their game at Anfield against Manchester United and I was very close to putting some of my bet this week on my team, Arsenal, to get a win at Manchester City.

After a couple of goalless draws the Gunners look like they have clicked and the 6-1 victory over Southampton was superb. At odds of 4.9 on BETDAQ they are a tempting proposition but I’ve got a stronger feeling about the golf so will stick to that.
