The sunshine has been out all week to warm us up after a miserable winter, but there will still be a frosty reception for Everton when they make the short trip across Liverpool. Everton hold a five point advantage over their bitter rivals and although a Champions League place looks out of reach, finishing above Liverpool and Europa League football next season would sign off an excellent year.
Everton head to Anfield on a good run of form, aside from the surprise defeat at Sunderland. Stephane Sessegnon’s winner that day is the only goal the Toffees have conceded in four league meetings and they will need all their defensive nous against red-hot Liverpool.
Everyone was wondering where the goals were coming from for Brendan Rodgers after Luis Suarez’s ban and then they tore Newcastle apart. An inspired Daniel Sturridge performance helped the Reds to a 6-0 win at St James’ Park.
However, I’m not expecting the same inept defensive effort from David Moyes’ team. It finished 2-2 in the first meeting and I can see another tight contest. Liverpool have drawn three of their last four games, so backing another is the way to go and I like the 1-1 correct score at 7.8.
We then head to Old Trafford where Manchester United face Chelsea for the fifth time this campaign. Other than the opening 45 minutes in the first half of the FA Cup tie, the Blues have had the better of the champions in the last two meetings.
It finished 3-2 to United in the first league contest as the Blues had two players sent off. Chelsea rallied from two goals down that day, but I wonder how much Thursday’s Europa League exploits will have taken out of Rafa Benitez’s troops.
Chelsea have been very impressive in West London of late, yet have been unable to replicate that form on their travels. Not such a good thing when the Red Devils have won 15 of their 17 home league games this year.
One area that United haven’t looked so assured in recent times is defence as they have only kept two clean sheets in their past six league fixtures.
Even though the title has long been decided it won’t mean that Sir Alex Ferguson will rest on his laurels. United will go for it in their penultimate home league game, but I fancy Chelsea to take a point as they push for Champions League qualification.
