SHAMROCK HITS 100/30 WINNING NAP: With Majenta at Dundalk last night. Today he looks ahead to the 2000 Guineas and naps at Limerick in a bid to keep the sequence going.
If Toronado does win the Guineas today, no one can accuse jockey Richard Hughes of not letting us know before the race.
It’s fair to say the Hannon and Hughes team are confident.
The bullish messages in the last few days have been getting stronger and the market is listening.
The front page of the Racing Post today screams…..
He’s very possibly the best I’ve ever ridden and I seriously think he’ll win. RICHARD HUGHES on Toronado
So where does this leave Dawn Approach – long term favourite for the race but looking at the BETDAQ market this morning it’s not inconceivable that he won’t even start favourite – an unthinkable scenario a week ago. Dawn Approach is 2.85 v Toronado at 3.1 at the time of writing.
It actually leaves Dawn Approach at a very backable price. As Donn McClean points out in his column on this site today it’s all educated guesswork at this stage of the season and you have two unbeaten colts who will fight it out at 3.50 this afternoon.
For me, Dawn Approach has achieved much more – and that’s not to crab Toronado who remains a horse of great potential – but with Dawn Approach there’s more exams passed at this stage of their respective careers. I’m not sure we learnt anything new with Toronado’s Craven success apart from that he’s in great shape to take on last season’s Dewhurst winner. There’s plenty of confidence coming from Jim Bolger’s yard too so we’ll settle back and watch, what should be a classic Classic.
I’m staying in Ireland for the NAP. Living Next Door looks the proverbial handicap snip in the 4.55 at Limerick with Ruby Walsh onboard. He bolted home at Cork over hurdles last time out and can win, for the first time in his career, two races on the spin.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Living Next Door (4.55 Limerick)
NEXT BEST: Dawn Approach (3.50 Newmarket)
