It’s not difficult to see why Newcastle and Liverpool matches are one of the most hotly anticipated fixtures in the football calendar when you look at how many goals have been scored over the years. When you add in the Magpies’ two top class strikers, we should be in for a cracker at St James’ Park.
Newcastle tore West Brom to shreds at the Hawthorns last Sunday with Papiss Demba Cisse scoring twice in the first half to take his tally to five since he arrived in England. As it stands Newcastle are level on points with Chelsea and realistically have Tottenham in their sights.
Alan Pardew will fancy his chances of another maximum points on Sunday given the run Liverpool are on. Kenny Dalglish’s side have been beaten four times in their past five league games and two of those have come against clubs in the bottom three. Newcastle fans will sense a big result is around the corner and I happen to agree with them.
The second game on Sunday sees Tottenham take on Swansea at White Hart Lane after dispatching Bolton at the second time of asking in the FA Cup. Spurs scored three on Tuesday night and it could have been ten if Adam Bogdan hadn’t had such a good game between the sticks.
Swansea have been superb all season, but the result at home to Everton suggests that they are starting to tire with a relatively small squad. White Hart Lane is never easy to visit and a home win is on the cards.
Blackburn are in with a shot at landing the league double over the champions on Monday evening. Steve Kean will be telling his side that anything is possible after the 3-2 win at Old Trafford and I hope he sends out a team with attacking intent. Rovers have done brilliantly to give themselves some breathing space down at the bottom, so he can afford to push United and test their back four.
United though are even winning without playing well at the minute as the result against Fulham showed.
Wayne Rooney continued his good scoring run and he’ll fancy his chances of chasing down Robin van Persie at the top of the scoring charts. His record league haul is 26, so expect him to be a constant threat. United won’t have it all their own way, but these are the type of games that Sir Alex loves winning and I fully expect him to do so again.
