I’ve never been so happy to see Tottenham win in all my life as I was a couple of weeks ago. Their 3-1 victory against QPR meant we’ve now banked some money for the Prince’s Trust and hopefully I’ll get a bit less stick from the lads too. Nick Kennedy knows absolutely nothing about betting, but he wanted to take the column off me – and I was almost ready to hand it to him after a few near misses!

This time out the subject of my BETDAQ wager is going to be the England versus Spain match, which takes place later today at Wembley.

To be honest, I’m a little worried for the Three Lions. There are a few big names missing from the squad and Spain are bringing their strongest selection over. I don’t know how experimental the team will be, but I am sure England’s second string will be no match for the Spanish. When you consider Cesc Fabregas and David Silva, two of the best midfielders in Europe, struggle to get into Vicente Del Bosque’s first XI, you quickly realise how much talent the world and European champions have at their disposal.

As he will be banned for the start of the European Championships, Wayne Rooney has been excluded by Fabio Capello for this match, so other options will need to be considered. Trouble is, the alternatives don’t exactly set the pulses racing. Capello can call on a lot of decent Premier League-standard players, but beyond Rooney, there’s not a truly world-class player among them. And while Jack Wilshere remains sidelined, there’s a distinct lack of creativity with Rooney missing too.

Spain have been absolutely relentless over the last few years – there is no doubt they are the best team on the planet, and I have said in these pages already I expect them to win Euro 2012. They have won nine of their ten matches in 2011, whereas England have hardly set the world alight. Their last five results at home have seen an uninspiring 1-0 win over Wales, draws with Ghana, Switzerland and Montenegro and a 2-1 defeat to France. With that in mind, I’m all over the 1.95 available on BETDAQ for the away win.
