I’ve always said I’d never be on Twitter, so I was as surprised as the 200-odd people who immediately followed ‘me’ when I found out I’d been Tweeting over the weekend. I have my suspicions as to which devious teammate might have stitched me up – they must know me pretty well as they’ve got me following a bunch of jockeys and trainers – and let’s just say I’m looking forward to getting my own back!
Everyone with an interest in horse racing would have been saddened by last week’s news of Denman’s shock retirement. He won two Hennessey Gold Cups and the second was one of the best races I’ve ever seen – and I’ve watched quite a few. He’s a proper legend.
A lot of people would love to see Denman’s great rival Kauto Star win the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, just down the road from our Sunbury training base, at Kempton. He’s an 8.0 shot on BETDAQ, but he’s now looking too old and half my money this week is on Long Run at 2.36.
My bet on Robin van Persie last time went south after I managed to find just about the only game in a year that he failed to score in. And having backed Arsenal to beat Fulham, it was the only league match in eight they’ve failed to win.
To overcome my bad luck I’ve decided to enlist the help of Ceri Parham, a man who calls himself the Oracle. Apparently it’s not for his love of the shopping centre in Reading, at least I don’t think it is, but because he knows absolutely everything there is to know about football. To be fair, he was Swansea City’s first team physio before joining us.
I wanted a bet on the Arsenal game, without going against my team in their match at Manchester City on Sunday. After consulting the Oracle, I’ve decided to put my money on there to be goals seeing as there has been an amazing total of 64 in City’s 15 Premier League games so far this season and an average of 3.6 per game in Arsenal fixtures.
