BET DEC V EXETER CHIEFS (27 DEC)

 

Merry Christmas one and all! It is a bit of a weird time as a professional rugby player as we have to train on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, but we still get to have a nice Christmas dinner, as long as we don’t over indulge, so you won’t hear me complaining.

 

A couple of unfamiliar faces at the training ground over the last couple of weeks have helped the club get in the spirit of things. No, we haven’t made any new signings on the quiet, but the special visitors to Sunbury have been Santa Claus and Eek O’Hairy.

 

For those of you who don’t know, Eek, our matchday mascot, has challenged Santa to a Christmas Present Dash during half-time of today’s game against Exeter. The contest will be a series of shuttles between the halfway, 22-metre and 10-metre lines and while BETDAQ can’t open a market on the race, they have given me a special Christmas bonus for the showdown with a £100 bet on the outcome.

 

As this is the inaugural Dash at the Madejski, there’s little form to go on. Eek, though, has home advantage and is the slight favourite on BETDAQ at 1.73. And as he’s called Santa out, I guess he must be pretty confident.

 

From what I’ve seen of them preparing for today’s clash, both men seem in decent shape. Santa might not look the most athletic, or have age on his side, but I can tell you he’s as fit as a fiddle – how else would he get to every house on Earth in one night?

 

As the largest leprechaun in the world, Eek will have quite a bit of weight to shift around the pitch and as any player will tell you, shuttles can be very tiring. There’s also the question of how quick he’ll be without his unicycle.

 

On the other hand, Santa’s proven his stamina time and time again over the years and I reckon that could well be a deciding factor. He’ll have had a good couple of night’s rest since doing his rounds and he’s got to be the value bet at 2.00.
