There was a big sigh of relief at training on Monday after Northampton beat London Welsh over the weekend to send them down and ensure we stay up. We’re now 12 points ahead of Welsh and, with safety assured, we can push on and think about next season.
It’s not that much of a surprise to see Ronnie O’Sullivan heading the betting at 7.0 on BETDAQ for the World Snooker Championship starting today. We saw this weekend with The Masters that bookmakers get scared of the big names. The Tiger Woods effect meant he was almost constantly favourite throughout the tournament even though it never looked like he was quite going to get there.
O’Sullivan hasn’t played a major event since winning the prize in Sheffield last year, but the layers must worry that if the real Ronnie shows up then they’ll be in trouble.
But snooker is one of those sports you need to be playing regularly. Practicing can only get you so far and unless you’re in a competition scenario, under the spotlight, then I think you’re vulnerable and I’ll be taking O’Sullivan on.
I was listening to Mark Selby earlier in the week and he sounds confident. He was beaten in the China Open final by Neil Robertson recently, but has been getting mentored by Stephen Hendry in the run up to the Worlds and you’re not going to get better advice than from the seven-time champion.
Hendry was the player I used to watch to avoid doing homework back in the day. He was a fantastic cue man and those who like snooker all have a soft spot for the King of the Crucible. If anyone can squeeze out some improvement in Selby then Hendry is the man and, at 7.6 on BETDAQ, he’s this week’s bet.
This is my last column of the season so I leave you with best wishes to enjoy a great summer of sport. The flat racing really got started this week and we have the Guineas, Derby and Royal Ascot to look forward to over the next few months.
I just hope that seeing serial bottler Adam Scott managing to land The Masters last weekend is not a sign of Aussie domination to come, ahead of the Ashes and the Lions Tour.
Let’s hope not!
