The 20 runners race sees the reappearance of exciting second-season chaser Grands Crus.
The bold-jumping grey, beaten just once in four starts over fences, is trained by David Pipe who won the race last year with Great Endeavour. He said: “In theory a handicap is a better starting point for Grands Crus than a level weights one and he’ll be better over two and a half miles first time back as he’ll be fresh and keen. He looks to have a favourite’s chance”.
Prior to going chasing, Grands Crus twice finished second to the mighty Big Buck’s over hurdles, at Cheltenham and at Aintree.
He won the Feltham Novices’ Chase in style at Christmas but was only fourth when favourite for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham in March.
Amongst his rivals will be Hunt Ball owned by the ebullient Anthony Knott (right) who said: “The more I look at the race, the more I see him winning it”.
“We are living the dream. I say living the dream but we will be living a reality come Saturday. When Nick [Schofield] lets him loose three out, I can’t see anything staying with him.
“We have his season mapped around four races and if we can land one of those we will be doing all right. I think realistically his best chances of success this season are in the Paddy Power and the King George, as his best performance last season was at Kempton. The Gold Cup may be a step too far, but we will find out.
“I am not worried about the other horses on Saturday, as I know what we have, although I do think Nicky Henderson’s horse (Triolo d’Alene) could be lingering on a nice weight.”
