Tomorrow sees the beginning of the British turf Flat racing season with the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster however, with the softening ground, long time favourite for the race, Captain Cat has been withdrawn by Roger Charlton.
The £100,000 Premier Handicap is the annual curtain raiser to the flat season but Charlton had warned punters during the week that his charge would be unlikely to make the line up with the forecasted rain that was scheduled for the Doncaster area by today. With almost 18mm of rain falling on Thursday night, the ground was changed to soft and Charlton tweeted; ‘’Captain Cat is now a definite non runner in the Lincoln tomorrow. After 18mm of racing the ground is now soft.’’
Twenty one horses will now go to post with the betting now being headed by Gabrial’s Kaka on the BETDAQ Exchanges, and he will be coming from a good draw in stall 16. Last year’s winner, Levitate is currently trading at 15.5 on BETDAQ, was not quite so lucky with the draw in stall eight, however, connections will not be unduly worried by that berth coming down the centre of the track.
With a high draw being the favourable option, Tullius, who is now second favourite, has one of the most favoured berths coming down the stands rail from number 22.
Jeremy Noseda is another trainer who won’t be favourably treated by the amount of rain falling at the course in recent days as he plans to run Consign, currently trading at 11.0 on BETDAQ. He will be racing from stall 13 and Noseda commented; ‘’We won’t know until the race before (the Spring Mile) but it looks a good draw. The horse is in great nick but good ground is ideal for him.’’
Also being affected by the weather is today’s meeting at Newcastle which is showing a host of non runners following a heavy thunderstorm at the track on Thursday.
Despite having had over 19mm of rain since Wednesday, the forecast earlier in the week was slightly more favourable and clerk of the course, James Armstrong took the action to water the course on Monday, however, he is undoubtedly regretting that decision now.
Twenty horses have been taken out of Newcastle so far today with more expected as the morning progresses. Having had a card of 72 horses declared on Thursday, 52 are now part of the card and may reduce further.
