CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WEDNESDAY: We preview Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg game between AJAX v TOTTENHAM with Spurs having work to do.
AJAX V TOTTENHAM
8pm Spurs have it all to do on Wednesday night as they travel to Amsterdam one goal behind after the first leg. Ajax have been a Champions League sensation this season and they are in a fantastic position here to reach the final – what a story that would be! While they may have beaten Real Madrid and Juventus away from home; it’s worth noting that they beat neither here and surely Spurs will be focusing on that for some hope, especially after losing again at the weekend in the Premier League.
The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Ajax 2.18, Tottenham 3.5 and the draw is 3.8. Ajax are heavy odds on favourites in the ‘To Qualify’ market with the home side trading 1.37 and Tottenham 3.65. An early goal for Spurs would certainly liven up that market though as Ajax would then be in the awkward position of being massively behind with another away goal for Spurs. The tie is set up perfectly.
Spurs had a terrible prep for this game. They lost two men against Bournemouth and then tried to hang on for a 0-0 only to lose in injury time. The amount of effort that would have took will surely have an impact here – and it was an important game in the race for a Top Four finish too. Perhaps that will be a huge factor here as we go deep into the game; will Spurs have the legs?
We would definitely recommended trading the goal markets late on in this one as we can see late goals. Even though Spurs had a tough weekend, we feel that Ajax are a little short here at 2.18. There’s no doubt that they have been fantastic in the Champions League; but so have Spurs and we expect the London side to make this game closer than those odds suggest so from a value point of view, we’re happy to lay Ajax. Let’s hope for plenty of drama in this one!
