CRICKET WORLD CUP: Australia taking on West Indies is the highlight of Thursday’s action at CWC 2019, and we could see an upset, writes BETDAQ’s Gerard Browne.
Australia v West Indies
Trent Bridge, Nottingham, hosts its third game of the tournament between two sides who both made winning starts to their campaigns. Australia had a seven wicket win over Afghanistan but didn’t have it all their own way. Alternatively, West Indies made a statement as a dark horse in the tournament with a seven wicket win over Pakistan. At the time of writing, Australia are the favourites on the exchange priced at 1.44 while West Indies are can be backed at 2.74.
Australia didn’t set pulses racing vs Afghanistan but credit must be given to the side from the Middle-East for a very spirited display. There was still plenty of positives for the Aussies, particularly the performance of David Warde, who finished on 89 not out. Alex Carey was excellent in the field notching up four catches for his side. Overall, Australia never really looked like losing to Afghanistan and reached their target of 208 with 15 overs to spare.
Meanwhile West Indies sent a reminder to everybody that they mean business with a comfortable win over Pakistan last Friday. They bowled the Asian side out for 105 from 21.4 overs. Pakistan simply never adapted to their fast bowling attack. Jason Holder claimed three wickets and Oshane Thomas claimed four wickets. Throw in Andre Russell along with Sheldon Cottrell and West Indies can most definitely pose Australia similar troubles. It wasn’t just about their bowling. Chris Gayle smashed 50 runs off just 34 balls as a target of 106 was never going to be a bridge too far for the talisman.
Australia will feel there is more in them than what they offered vs Afghanistan. Steve Smith and Micthell Starc are two players Australia will look to have more of an impact this time around. West Indies showed vs Pakistan that on their day, they can be as good as any side in the world. We have already seen results that have not gone according to plan and I give West Indies every chance of producing that again on Thursday.
Verdict: West Indies.
