One of the biggest Sporting events of the year takes centre stage on Sunday as England and New Zealand go head-head at Lord’s in the ICC Cricket World Cup Final. England showed a mixture of maturity and quality in their batting display. They never looked in trouble as Jason Roy and Johnny Bairstow forged a strong opening partnership. Roy also treated the Edgbaston crowd to some wonderful sixes. If Roy and Bairstow can continue from where they left off, England will be hard to beat.
The New Zealand bowlers need to be in good form on Sunday. Give credit where it is due, New Zealand bowling has been excellent at this World Cup. There has only been 3 occasions where they haven’t bowled their opposition out. Lockie Ferguson has been their stand out bowler but it was Matt Henry who was the hero vs India, claiming 3 wickets. They wouldn’t need telling that there batting needs improving from the India game. A total of 240 runs will not win many games of ODI Cricket. New Zealand are definitely capable of bigger scores with players like Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Jimmy Neesham.
This will be the 2nd meeting between the sides within 11 days. England came out on top by a comprehensive 119 runs at the Riverside in the Group Stage. I expect this game to be closer. New Zealand have the experience of being in the Final 4 years ago. England have the advantage of a large home crowd. Football didn’t come home last summer but I think cricket will be coming home on Sunday evening.
