NOVEMBER MEETING: DAQMAN stays at Cheltenham on Friday for three bets on the first day of the November meeting. His nap runs in the Cross Country Chase.
SUNDAY SPECIAL: The Morgaiana Hurdle at Punchestown on Sunday is shaping up to be a cracker but will the favourite Samcro run?
SAMCRO DOUBT
The Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown is shaping up to be a cracker but it can’t be better odds than 50/50 about Samcro actually running.
Gordon Elliott has entered the six-year-old but it’s ground dependent and unless the forecast changes he is unlikely to get the softer ground he needs.
Samcro, winner of the Ballymore at Cheltenham earlier this year has suffered two reverses in his two subsequent races.
He fell in the Punchestown Champion Hurdle when still very much in contention three out and then met a shock defeat at the hands of Bedrock on his seasonal reappearance at Down Royal. The going that day was good and it’s unlikely he will be risked on it again.
Willie Mullins has won the last seven runnings of the Morgiana and looks determined to keep his hands on it with three of the six runners including last year’s winner Faugheen who loves the course and romped to a 16 lengths success 22 months ago.
TIGER SET TO ROLL AGAIN
1.15 Cheltenham A hugely competitive handicap hurdle in which the proverbial blot on the handicap could be Dostal Phil.
Trained by Philip Hobbs who is in good early season form, Dostal Phil is lightly raced and shaped well at Uttoxeter last time out finishing second to Tokay Dokey. The winner looks useful and the selection might well be well handicapped off this mark.
Another lightly raced runner My Brother should get closer to his Fakenham conqueror Jacbequick on today’s terms and looks an interesting contented sneaking in off bottom weight.
3.00 Cheltenham The Cross Country Chase isn’t necessarily the obvious calling point for the nap of the day but I really can’t see beyond Tiger Roll making a winning comeback. The Gordon Elliott trained Grand National hero is expected to be quite forward for his seasonal reappearance.
As well as his heroics at Aintree, he also won the big race over this quirky course at the Cheltenham Festival and goes well for today’s pilot.
Even allowing for him being slightly off peak form he should still prove good enough for a comeback win. Josies Orders was well behind Tiger Roll back in March and only beat two home on his seasonal reappearance at Galway. He won this back in 2015 but might find the younger Tiger Roll too strong.
3.35 Cheltenham Coolanly looks a value alternative to the favourite Pym. He was a faller on his comeback at Chepstow but has some useful form from last season and remains a progressive sort.
Pym was a little disappointing at Ascot when a beaten odds-on favourite behind Anemoi and this is a significant step up in trip for him.
