In the adjacent stall today, Trip To Rome (5), has scored just the once, always a bad sign, but has moved stables and has blinkers first time.
Dancing Magic (3), 6th in the Newbury Spring Cup, has never won a race. Over to you, William Buick.
Revich is 431 in this race, winning last year from stall 6 but the ground was soft. Percys Lad was third, giving 6lb to the winner but is in stall 13 today.
Front-runner Liamarty Dreams (2) has scored here and won the last twice, which is why his mark is now so high. Island Native (6) and Alzahir (8) will try to get to the pace.
⭕ 1.50 Ascot Danny Tudhope switches to Ascot but his opening ride on Dragon Leader was one of the lays of the morning against the plunge horse, American Bay, seen as well handicapped, getting weight all round, nearly a stone from Dragon Leader.
STOUTE HEARTS FOR PASSENGER
⭕ 3.05 Chester (Huxley Stakes, 1m 2.5f Group 2) Richard Kingscote blamed himself for Passenger’s Dante third (continually denied a clear run) and the colt took close order in the Derby market but didn’t get the trip at Epsom.
The Huxley looks ideal, with Sir Michael Stoute hitting form at Chester yesterday with my supernap, Never So Brave. Passenger won first time last season and again after a break.
Israr took a Group 2 at the July meeting but finished 22022 either side of that and was finally blinkered the last day.
Aidan O’Brien got into his stride yesterday and has won this race three times in the last six seasons. Hans Andersen must improve a good 10lb.
Mashoor landed a hat-trick in Ireland last Spring and has won second run back in the last two seasons.
BALDING HAS A GRAND CHANCE
⭕ 3.40 Chester Cup STATS: No winning favourite in the decade; six winners of double-figure odds. Results by stall: 2, 4, 11, 4, 2, 6, 16, 10, 10, 14.
Ian Williams, who has won this race twice, has booked Jim Crowley, Joe Fanning and Franny Norton for his three against the field this afternoon, spread across the stalls in 6, 11 and 14, all getting at least 17lb from the top-weight.
Andrew Balding also has a trio below 9st, and he employs Oisin Murphy (Aztec Empire) and Hayley Turner (Grand Providence), with Spirit Mixer claiming off Callum Hutchinson and in first-time cheekpieces.
Grand Providence won the Cesarewitch Trial on good ground but was down the field in the Cesarewitch proper on soft. Aztec Empire was a close third in the Northumberland Plate.
Top-weight Falcon Eight, who won the race in 2021 with 9st 10lb. on good to soft; runner-up in the Irish Cesarewitch (soft) to Magellan Strait but both would be happier on an easier surface.
That may also apply to The Grand Visir (second to Falcon Eight in 2021), who hasn’t won a race since June, 2019.
I’m sure Jumps trainers were looking for a slog in the mud. But no chance this year. It will be fast-run.
A speedy winner at 2m at York last summer was Forza Orta closely matched with Aztec Empire, who has been gelded.
Zoffy was second last year and is in better shape now, says Hugo Palmer, who trains just down the road.
But he is badly out of form (1-28), with his Chester runners this week starting 100-1, 80-1, 40-1 twice, 28-1, 25-1 and 22-1, seven of them finishing last or last but one.
