DAQMAN NAPS AGAINST CLASSIC COLTS TONIGHT: Eight meetings today, with Daqman looking closely at Bright on, Goodwood and The Curragh and making the bold decision to nap against the Classic generation tonight. Has he seen the Light! Headlines:
NINE-YEAR-OLD SPRINT ROCKETS
SOFFIA SO BOLD AT THE CURRAGH
CASTING LIGHT ON CLASSIC YEAR
SOLO RIDE FOR FABULIST DETTORI
NINE-YEAR-OLD SPRINT ROCKETS
2.30 Brighton Though the winner was beaten afterwards – probably failing to act on a change of going – the third and fourth when Leopardina was second at Redcar five weeks ago have both won since.
Leopardina is by Lawman, who won the French Derby on softish ground. There are Group 3 and Listed winners at today’s trip on the dam’s side.
Pink Flamingo is on a hat-trick, but has been raised 10lb overall, which is the difference today between her handicap mark and that of Leopardina, not insurmountable but not an appetiser for a bet.
3.05, 3.35 and 5.10 Brighton I don’t much like this roller-coaster track, but some horses love it. Pour La Victoire (7.6 on BETDAQ in the 3.05) and Roy Rocket (11.0 on BETDAQ in the 3.35) are both nine years old and have each won nine times at Brighton.
Pour La Victoire and Roy Rocket have both won on soft ground. No others in the two races have done so. Small stakes on each should give us one reward if not two.
Still on old-timers, the rain won’t worry Good Luck Charm (5.10) – won on the soft here in August – whose form at Brighton is 20214401031001100010.
4.05 Brighton Here’s another race of close rivalry. Message was beaten a neck, giving weight to a Roger Charlton runner on the last day in May. Charlton now runs the promising maiden filly Tamachan against him.
Interesting that the handicapper pitches Tamachan 4lb higher in this handicap than Message, though the filly has yet to be placed, partly because Message is brought out quickly to avoid a 2lb rise from that neck second.
Tamachan is Roger Charlton’s only runner at Brighton today, where he has an 80% strike rate. (4-5). Message was odds on this morning and Tamachan 4.8 on BETDAQ, a must early position giving us the chance to back an easier Message later. Or, head down, lay Message at 1.99 in the green.
SOFFIA SO BOLD AT THE CURRAGH
7.10 The Curragh (Ballyogan Stakes) Divine won this for Mick Channon in 2016, tempting him to try again here with Dan’s Dream, his recent runner-up to Happen here in the Athasi Stakes (Group 3)
This is a drop back in trip but she’s won over this kind of sprint distance on soft ground when she made all the running. She has the speed but can she hold on today?
Lethal Promise won a strong-looking Listed at Cork, and this single step up in grade may not be beyond her. Dividing the two on the ratings is Soffia, offered at 4.0 on BETDAQ.
Soffia absolutely bounded up this track to win the Bold Lad Sprint here in September, returning to form at Naas three weeks back. Her love of the Curragh (two from two) is hard to resist.
CASTING LIGHT ON CLASSIC YEAR
7.40 The Curragh (Silver Stakes) Willie Mullins has his hands on the silver! The champion of champion Irish trainers is in devastating form over fences, hurdles and on the Flat, including NH Flat races. Anything goes in his current, devastating burst of form: 1100132110011121101.
Here he saddles 4.0 BETDAQ offer Riven Light, twice a winner first run back and famously trained to win the same race twice at the Galway festival last July (soft). He takes on the Classic generation with his seven-year-old, who is twice the age of four of his six rivals.
In races like this, we will be looking hard now to see whether class of 2019 has any real quality, paricularly while they’re getting so much weight from their elders.
The three-year-olds Guaranteed (Jim Bolger; three winners of this race since 2010) and Old Glory (Aidan O’Brien) have Guineas experience. Old Glory and Guaranteed were ninth and tenth in the Irish 2,000, and get between 10lb and 13lb from Riven Light .
The King ran well in the Mooresbridge behind Group-1 animals, Magical and Flag Of Honour, but that may be flattering.
SOLO RIDE FOR FABULIST DETTORI
8.40 Goodwood Frankie Dettori stays up late for his only ride of the day, Fabulist, trying to prove her that her Coronation Stakes entry was worthwhile.
Fabulist, who was slowly away when odds on at Newbury, is a daughter of Dubawi, so likely to take a step forward any time now after just two runs.
Tamachan (4.05 Brighton) finished just behind her at Newbury. If she wins for us this afternoon, she boosts our bet on Fabulist.
