⭕ 3.00 Doncaster Cup I’m looking for a change on the Cup scene and I think it can happen via a trendsetter from Glorious Goodwood and a three-year-old whose stable has done the trick before.
* OUT WITH THE OLD: Coltrane (2022) and Sweet William (last year) have both won this before; Sweet William was also second in 2023 and Coltrane has also finished fourth and fifth.
Another veteran, Galway maiden hurdle winner, Hipop De Loire has finished 5th (denied a clear run in 2024) and 6th in the Ebor; not the pace on firm ground last month.
David Menuisier’s Sunway has never really picked up on the promise of last year’s St Leger third and he was a length behind Sweet William in the Goodwood Cup.
* IN WITH THE NEW: Another Sir Mark Prescott lightweight, Pendragon (BETDAQ 6.7) is up two stone this summer, narrowly beaten the last day giving weight to the subsequent Melrose winner.
It’s his first try in a marathon and three-year-olds have won it only three times this century, though one of them was the first of two winners in the race for Sir Mark.
Also progressive is the entire, Kyle Of Lochalsh, third in the Ascot Stakes last summer after winning off 85 and now rated 105 after a runaway win the Goodwood Cup (2m 4f) on the first day of August. BETDAQ 15.0
Oxford Comma was 13 lengths back in third that day, with Tashkhan (Cesarewitch 3rd in 2023) remote in sixth.
DO YOU WANNA DANCE..
⭕ 1.15 Doncaster (Mallard Handicap) The Mallard is Doncaster’s Ebor and today it has three Ebor runners in it from three weeks ago on firm on the Knavesmire: Subsequent (9th), Roaring Legend (10th), Shadow Dance (11th).
Since Subsequent and Shadow Dance were second and third in the Mallard a year ago on good to soft, you have a clear quality comparison between the two 1m 6f races.
Subsequent is 121000 over the trip, reducing to 11 on soft ground, so a lot depends on the going today.
It could be drying up for Shadow Dance, who is 18lb better off for a neck with Subsequent on last year’s race, albeit Subsequent was only three then.
Partners with Shadow Dance (BETDAQ 5.3 this morning) is jockey-in-form Ray Dawson, who gets his first Classic ride on Rahiebb in tomorrow’s St Leger, with trainer Varian’s last seven form figures 1212132.
Synergism ( Betdaq Betting Exchange 7.24) has been slipped into the bottom of the handicap off a featherweight, though it’s a worry that Sir Mark Prescott was left disappointed at Doncaster yesterday, including a poor run from 11-10 favourite, Moon Target, and the neck defeat of Consent.
LUCKY-SEVEN SOUMILLON
⭕ 1.50 Doncaster (Flying Scotsman) Frescobaldi can be a lucky seventh Ballydoyle ride for Christopher Soumillon since their linking up after the injury to Ryan Moore.
The No Nay Never colt has already travelled to England, winning the Convivial Maiden at York three weeks back. BETDAQ 4.9 taken.
⭕ 2.25 Doncaster (Flying Childers) Aidan O’Brien, who has had only one previous runner in this (third), saddles a gelding, Mission Central, dual winner over 6f but showing a lot of pace.
Backward in the Spring, Revival Power, sister to Tim Easterby’s Nunthorpe winner Winter Power, has officially improved 17lb in two summer starts. BETDAQ 7.8 taken.
IT’S ALL GOING FOR BLUE
⭕ 4.15 Sandown David O’Meara goes for a hat-trick in this race with his older horses.
Blue For You drops in trip and grade and gets his ground off his lowest ever mark. BETDAQ 8.2 taken.
