2.10 Doncaster (Sceptre Stakes) This is the only race of the day at Doncaster with more than eight runners.
The word is for Mot Juste, to be saddled by Roger Varian, who trained the winner of this race (2015-16) in successive seasons. Though 12-1 in to 8-1 with bookmakers, she was 11.0 in the BETDAQ orange this morning.
Three-year-olds are best in the Sceptre (80% winners in the decade) and Mot Juste came good at this time last year. Her best form is at Newmarket so Goodwood the last twice would not have been in her favour.
Market leader is her stablemate Farzeen, more on potential than form, so a ready-made alter native at 10.0 BETDAQ offers.
WAKE UP TO SLEEPING LION’S CHANCE
2.40 Doncaster (Mallard Handicap) A moderate field and it’s a case of which one is suited by the way the race is run. A slow pace and those with speed to score over shorter could come through. An honest pace and Sleeping Lion’s stamina will kick in.
Theglasgowwarrior was third in the race last year but has never won this far and Genetics also looks a non stayer. Bartholomeu Dias is 0-10 on turf.
Charles Kingsley was an overnight gamble to stop Saroog’s bid for a hat-trick. Saroog scored at Ascot then stepped up a grade to this class-2 level to win on the July Course at HQ.
But, on collateral form, he can’t beat Brown Jack Stakes runner-up, Sleeping Lion, who looks a better bet at 7.2 BETDAQ offers than Charles Kingsley, a winner three times since May but whose class-2 form is 004004.
3.10 Doncaster Cup After nine straight Cup wins, including two Ascot Gold Cups and three Goodwood Cups – plus two Lonsdales under his belt – Stradivarius (racing off 121) is back at Doncaster two years on from his St Leger third to Capri.
Dee Ex Bee (off 119) can beat him on the ratings, and is 5lb better for his neck defeat at Goodwood but Frankie Dettori was already celebrating approaching the line that day and Dee Ex Bee has lost out to Stradivarius three times in a row in various circumstances.
ALI SET TO SHOW OFF HIS FLYING KICK
3.45 Doncaster (Flying Childers Stakes) Frankie Dettori has won this five times and his mount, A’Ali, is officially 9lb clear on 113, and the 2.44 on BETDAQ this morning was value in my book.
After his drubbing by Earthlight on heavy ground at Deauville, this is a wise move to drop back to the minimum where he can use his speed to good effect.
The return to 5f has also helped Alligator Alley, who is around 102, 104 at best (Wheels On Fire just behind him on Molecomb form).
Pity this isn’t a handicap. I’d be on the improver, Golden Dragon, who beat Kings Lynn at Windsor. Kings Lynn (receiving weight) beat the Gimcrack third yesterday. Underrated at 87 but Golden Dragon still has a lot of work to do in this company.
