FOUND! ‘RUBIES’ BEST OUTSIDER

⭕ 4.30 Epsom (The Oaks) ABC GUIDE: See Daqman Wednesday

IT’S all been a fillies’ education so far, and half the field today – Aidan O’Brien with two and Ralph Beckett with four – are with masters of the art of training them.

Ylang Ylang has the credentials, fifth in the 1,000 Guineas, from which Fallen Angel (8th) went on to win the Irish version.

Fallen Angel had been pipped half a length last July by an Ollie Sangster filly who then went down half a length to Ylang Ylang.

The form seems hardly to have moved an inch from last year to this. Is that good? Not if there are improvers about.

And one of them, Ylang Ylang’s stablemate Rubies Are Red, was as green as Greta in the Lingfield trial, falling down the hill but, once in the straight, absolutely flew.

Her sister Found was placed in 20 of 21 races and won the Arc but Epsom is also downhill with a left-hand bend, geography like Lingfield. On the plus side, she always finishes well; she likes plenty of cut.

Dance Sequence was equally green in her Nell Gwyn second and 1,000 Guineas 9th but with trainer Charlie Appleby insisting that it was all about getting her ready for today’s Oaks. She’s got her ground too.

Secret Satire (Andrew Balding) didn’t know much about it either, failing to settle, but still winning the Musidora at York, with the form franked by the runner–up in the Height Of Fashion trial at Goodwood.

Caught U Looking is bred to improve for the trip but was beaten in April by Ezeliya, whose trainer has been out of form ever since.

That brings us to the Beckett squad. Rossa Ryan’s choice is Forest Fairy but any one – or all – of the stable’s players could improve after a total of only 11 runs for the entire quartet.

Betdaq Betting Exchange : DAQMAN 1-2-3 Rubies Are Red 11.0 taken; Dance Sequence 14.0 with Ylang Ylang third, not certain to stay.

TEEJ BRED TO JOIN THE ‘A’ TEAM

⭕ 2.00 Epsom (Woodcote Stakes, 6f, 2yo) The low six stalls win 90% of the time and the 2022 winner was the exception that proved the rule, drawn wide in 9 but with William Buick happy to plough a lone furrow.

No Buick in this today and, of the jockeys booked, the in-form big-race pilot is Silvestre De Sousa on J Street (out of stall 2), though trainer Craig Lister has a modest 9% strike rate.

Ripon winner Assertively, from the one stall, has cheekpieces applied on only his third start, after fourth, a losing favourite, the last day.

New Charter (stall 3) is one to keep on side; from the family of Time Charter, she showed at Newmarket that she liked to get on with it, but was held back there, as you would, finishing well into second.

End Of Story (5) has two-year-old winners in his pedigree and has already won at Thirsk, with second, third, fourth and fifth all boosting the form since.

Teej A (6) was soon clear at Chester to win her second start. Her sire also scored at Chester, stepping up to win a better race at Newbury next time, before second in the Coventry and winning the July Stakes.

Despite stall 9, Megalithic has to be considered but the BETDAQ value is surely Teej A at BETDAQ 6.6 this morning

ROAD LOOKS CLEAR FOR ORBAAN

⭕ 2.35 Epsom (1m+ handicap) You know how tricky a handicap is if one near the front of the market (Dancing Magic) has a rating of 95 but has never won a race in his life (0-13)!

Or when another well fancied today (Bopedro), third in the Cambridgeshire, has just one win from his last 17 races, allowed to start for the most part from 9-1 to 16-1 and more, but suddenly all the rage for one race on one day and won at 3-1 favourite.

I’ve reached for last year’s result to try for an edge. Dutch Decoy, beaten only half a length, is 6lb higher in the ratings but carries the same weight, which indicates a weaker race, as those with dodgy form suggest.

Beaten into fourth but only a length and quarter off the winner, Orbaan has dropped 12lb in the ratings – 18lb in the weights – with Silvestre De Sousa booked: BETDAQ 10.0. Fantastic Fox has been third and fifth in the race in the last two years,.

Koy Koy has won on top of the ground or on AW; the handicapper has had hold of Al Mubhir since he won on soft more than a year back.

Notre Belle Bete has won fresh and has scored in the Spring for two years running: 17.0 taken.

THE FLAME CAN UPSTAGE EMILY

⭕ 3.10 Epsom (Coronation Cup) Emily Upjohn takes on her eighth consecutive Group-1 which began with her second here in the Oaks.

She won only twice in the sequence but one of them was this Coronation Cup from the 2022 Derby runner-up, Westover.

Luxembourg has never been to Epsom and never won over 1m 4f but his Irish Champion Stakes second to Auguste Rodin ensures his high rating, only a pound behind Emily but conceding the 3lb sex allowance.

Hamish has won his last five starts and the ground looks nearly soft enough but he is eight years old now and you have to go back to 2014 for a winner of his age, a hot favourite from France.

Maybe the French have the answer again with Feed The Flame half Hamish’s age and over from Chantilly, a month after being beaten only half a length in the Ganay on ground too heavy for him. BETDAQ 4.4.
