SELECT FIELD FOR THE BOBBYJO: Today Daqman previews the Bobbyjo Chase, which has just four runners at Fairyhouse on Saturday but all engaged in the Grand National.

IS THERE ANOTHER HEDGEHUNTER?

⭕ 3.50 Fairyhouse tomorrow (Bobbyjo Chase) It’s a mini-National. The 2022 winner, Any Second Now, went on to be second at Aintree, and last year’s Bobbyjo second, Vanillier, was also runner-up in the National.

Only four left in this time, a Grade 3 famously won in 2005 by one of the Grand National heroes of the modern era, Hedgehunter.

Despite the small field, tomorrow’s probables suggest that the race could again play a major role in April, with all four entered in the Aintree marathon.

In fact, all four are guaranteed a place in the National field because they are weighted in the first 40 on the Liverpool card, numbered in the National as follows:-

10 I Am Maximus (Willie Mullins) Won the Irish Grand National on this course last April and a Grade 1 novice here (the Drinmore) in December.

26 Fury Road (Gordon Elliott) Fell at the second in last year’s Grand National and his chase form is a modest 2-14.

29 Vanillier (Gavin Cromwell) The grey gets more weight in this Bobbyjo than at Aintree (4lb more) from I Am Maximus; he is 5lb better in with Minella Crooner and 7lb with Fury Road.

35 Minella Crooner (Gordon Elliott) Living off a short-head defeat of I Am Maximus in a beginners’ at Fairyhouse in December, 2022, and a small-field Listed at Wexford last November.

17.0 ENFORCEMENT FANCIED

⭕ 3.30 Sedgefield, today Two staying chases, timed within 10 minutes of each other, this first one in the Red Rum series.

Monaghan Boy and Elleon have ground out places among Northern novices of their generation but have never won over jumps.

Don Brocco has won over hurdles but that was two years back, and Fortuitos Find has won only a Point on good ground.

Enforcement is usually a rank outsider; there has been money for him just the once in three years, and that was when he won well at Uttoxeter.

Sean Bowen rode him into a place in this grade over a mile shorter in December and is back on board today over a trip that may well suit. BETDAQ 17.0 (2 places; pay out 0.25)

NATIONAL DOUBLE FOR JONJO

⭕ 3.40 Exeter (Devon National) Course passed morning inspection Jonjo O’Neill took a gamble that Track And Trace would stay when turning him out for the North Yorkshire Grand National.

He certainly did and today is a similar trip and class of race, with Jonjo’s seven-year-old just 5lb higher but Betdaq Betting Exchange 3.5 this morning.

Robyndzone is 121F1, so three from four still standing, winner a furlong or so shorter at Haydock but a class higher on heavy in December.

Lyrical Genius likes to be in front and Take Your Time goes with the flow, so there should be no hanging about.

⭕ 4.45 Exeter Just a watching race for me but potentially could throw up a good winner. Joyau Allen and Bill Joyce have both made impressive starts winning bumpers with ease and square off in what surely should be a match.

It’s a coin flip for me so at likely similar odds it’s a no bet race.

BEAR WITH ME

⭕ 4.50 Lingfield A competitive seven furlong handicap closes the card and I’m sure the remarkable ten-year-old Sir Titan will put up another brave show on his 74th start! He’s down in class but up in distance and has never won over 7f.

It might be best left to the youngster Bernie The Bear who gets a further drop in the weights and can continue the progress he has made since joining the Linda Perratt stable.

He seems to go well for 7lb claimer Tommie Jakes and a reproduction of his fourth to the in-form Pallas Lord at Newcastle last time out might just be good enough.

MUST BE MASQ

⭕ 8.30 Newcastle Dembe is slowly starting to run back into the kind of form that saw him win four in a row in 2022 but is up in grade and has been expensive to follow. Not for me as a likely favourite.

Endless Power flopped at Chelmsford last time out and it’s a leap of faith to think he will be back to his best after that.

I see no reason why hat-trick seeking Masqool can’t put in another bold bid despite the 5lb penalty.

He just does enough but looks value at current prices on a card where there are a couple of options for the ‘money buyers’ – notably Charlie Appleby’s Silent Age in the 6.00.
