TODAY: LADBROKES’ SILVER BELL: The historic Ladbrokes’ Silver Bell, the feature race of the day at Hamilton tonight, is what handicap racing is all about, with a solid 15-runner field. Daqman has two bets at 4.0 and 7.0 on BETDAQ. Mark Johnston tries to land a hat-trick in the race, which would be his fourth win from its five runnings.

SATURDAY CELEBRATION STAKES! Saturday-king Daqman resumes his challenge to Pricewise of the Racing Post, with terrestrial-TV racing at Beverley, Newmarket and Goodwood for the Celebration Mile. The score is Daqman 79, Pricewise 11 (overall 220-84).

DAQMAN HITS THE HEADLINES AGAIN: Daqman was spot on with his headlines yesterday, when his Celebration Mile ABC guide warned of the big punt on Kodi Bear – before the field cut up and he became odds on – and he started the day’s betting with an 11-8 winner at Stratford:

BELL BILLING FOR AN OSKAR PERFORMANCE

7.30 Hamilton (Ladbrokes’ Lanark Silver Bell) This race, last run at Lanark in 1977, goes back to the 17th century. It has been revived here very successfully with 12 to 14 runners in each of its four seasons, 15 tonight.

It’s neck-and-neck (two apiece) between three and four year olds so far, but there is just one second-season animal running today, Polarisation.

The race has been dominated by the Mark Johnston stable (3-4), and Polarisation was a class-4 course winner here in July before being hiked two grades to land the Melrose at the York Ebor meeting.

The worry is Oskar Denarius, who came away eight lengths clear of a class-5 field at Windsor, after being one of two dead-heaters seven lengths in front of the rest at Chepstow, again on the soft.

It’s Polarisation’s fourth run in August, whereas the improver Oskar Denarius has had only six races in his life. At 4.0 and 7.0 respectively, I dutched them on BETDAQ this morning.

GHALIB WILL LOVE THE GROUND AT FFOS LAS

3.25 Thirsk The low seven stalls have not featured at the business end of this race. Highest drawn of all is Hoof It, 18lb lower than his last winning mark, though that was in 2011. Like Mappin Time (in 17), he needs the ground to dry out.

Rex Imperator (a tasty 10.0 on BETDAQ from stall 14) was back to winning form here at Thirsk in July but, 19lb lower than when he won the Goodwood Stewards Cup in 2013, was well fancied there for the Consolation on the last day, but was drawn on the wrong side.

Today is his consolation, with (7.4 offered) stablemate Eccleston (stall 11), also a winner in class 2, a big danger and so, too, therefore Snap Shots (in 13) on their running at Ripon, and Johara, who has been waiting for soft ground. I’ll take the O’Meara pair.

3.50 Ffos Las This is an interesting match between the heavy-ground course winner Sir Billy Wright and the three-year-old Ghalib, a scorer on soft but drawn on the wrong side when raised to class 2 at Newmarket on the last day.

Though his best run in between was in defeat at Wolverhampton, Ghalib’s conqueror that day went on to win the Great St Wilfrid.

5.15 Newmarket A day of maidens and a trappy two-year-olds’ handicap, barring this class 3, in which type of race the combo of Jeremy Noseda and Frankie Dettori have a one-win-in-three course record.

Their runner, Mister Brightside, has already scored over 7f at the venue, whereas Beardwood has been kept to 6f until today.

5.45 Newcastle David Barron is having a shocking run of 1-20, just one winner in the last fortnight, which does not inspire confidence in his pair, Rockcandy Mountain and War Girl.

But at least he’s still way ahead of Ron Barr and Shaun Harris, who have gone 95 days and 37 respectively without a winner, together saddling 66 losers in that time.

Maybe it opens the door to the in-form Ivan Furtado’s Ski Blast, running over a more appropriate trip after a good second at Doncaster was followed by a Beverley flop, when dropped back to the minimum.
