9-4 NAP AMONG THREE WINNERS: Daqman, who landed his nap yesterday with Bennys Mist (WON 9-4), tipped three winners out of four on the Wincanton card.
TODAY: 17.0 ANTE-POST BET: Daqman tries to go one jump ahead with a bet in the Champion Hurdle at 17.0 before the horse runs its final trial tomorrow.
TOMORROW’S ACTION: All the top action will be previewed by Saturday-king Daqman, who leads Pricewise 18-6 in big-race value tipping since their head-to-heads started on November 23.
Add Mullins power now to your ante-post wallet! Don’t wait before the opening race at Sandown tomorrow. Anticipate the result with some huge offers on BETDAQ for Cheltenham.
The Willie Mullins’ trained Un De Sceaux will be odds on for the race, the Contenders Hurdle, with Willie already having declared: ‘It must be the Champion Hurdle next for this one.’
Yet Un De Sceaux is hovering around 17.0 for the Cheltenham title on BETDAQ as I write, though as low as 10-1 with Ladbrokes, the only bookmaking firm you can trust to know the time of day.
If, as seems likely by the odds on offer, Un De Sceaux wins at Sandown, he must shorten up, leaving you with ‘overs’ to play with as a trade.
I will go into the Un De Sceaux form tomorrow – he’s unbeaten in six career starts – because right now I have something more to say about the ante-post books in that connection.
If Mullins has the holder, Hurricane Fly, and seems inclined to run Un De Sceaux in the Champion Hurdle, it suggests to me that he has the Mares’ Hurdle in mind for Annie Power, who has already beaten Zarkandar twice over an extended trip.
Mullins has no other understudy for the mares’ champion, Quevega, who is at the age of 10 now, the same veteran stage as Hurricane Fly. One of them must give way to a youngster one of these days, and only Willie knows the well-being of Quevega.
She comes to the Cheltenham well, attempting five consecutive years of wins in the Mares Hurdle and World Series Hurdle at Punchestown, a double she missed out on in 2009 (first and third) but has landed for the last four seasons.
I see Un De Sceaux waiting in the wings on Hurricane Fly with Annie Power set for Quevega’s seat if the queen of 2m 4f hurdlers vacates her throne.
Wary bookies go as low as 7-2 Annie Power for the mares’ race, yet BETDAQ layers will offer you as much as 9.8 this morning.
Our ante-post bets are being staked to win 30. We already have Rocky Creek for the Grand National. So today’s Mullins’ duo will create this table, an ABC ante-post bet, the first of the year:
DAQMAN’S ANTE-POST BETS 2014
3.4pts win ANNIE POWER (at 9.8 on BETDAQ) for the Mares Hurdle
1.1pts win ROCKY CREEK (at 28.0 on BETDAQ) for the Grand National
1.8pts win UN DE SCEAUX (at 17.0 on BETDAQ) for the Champion Hurdle
TODAY’S RACING: Hoods and blinkers are in the news this morning, with some excellent research by James Pyman in the trade paper, listing the trainers who transform their better horses.
How about a list for animals like Crazy Train, hooded and tongue-tied for her debut (2.20 Kempton). Can you get lower than a beast plastered with aids first time out?
I’m not keen, betting-wise, on these jumpers’ bumpers, though a good strike-rate in any discipline can open my eyes, and Mick Channon’s Kempton record is a remarkable 4-9 (or 44%), with 1-1 in bumpers, and he’s had a hot run on AW Flat.
Channon’s only runner of the day, Sgt Reckless (5.10) has already won a bumper on Polytrack (at Lingfield) and was supported this morning as though defeat is out of the question.
That’s despite a Paul Nicholls runner (Ranjaan) and a useful Polytrack horse, Troopingthecolour, who should give Sam Twiston-Davies a better ride than Crazy Train.
Troopingthecolour is two from two at Kempton , though was well beaten aimed higher in the Betdaq Middle Distance Final in December.
He is unexposed at today’s 2m but Ranjaan, a 2m hurdles winner on the course, was second in a similar 2m jumpers’ bumper here a year or so ago, which is hard to ignore.
The bet of the meeting must be Spirit Of Shankly (2.55), 2-3 in bumpers on a sound surface and in the frame in the Lanzarote Hurdle here at Kempton.
It is equally difficult to envisage defeat for Mbhali (3.10) at Lingfield, with Mark Johnston’s yard absolutely flying (current form figures 11111322).
Blinkers could be a help to my outsider of the day, Duke Of Monmouth (3.20 Catterick). After a poor spell chasing, he must be thereabouts on his form over hurdles about a year ago.
Charlie Mann thinks so. He makes a 460-mile round trip from Lambourn to Catterick. Surely a better chance than the 19.0 I’m offered on BETDAQ as I write.
What could be nicer for Jamie Moore on his 29th birthday than driving up the A1 to Catterick for one ride, and that, a horse prone to make blunders?
His mount, Pearls Legend (3.55), is another traveler today. This time he’s John Spearing’s only representative. The race trip and ground are in his favour, and a clear round should see him make up for his earlier novicy near misses.
DAQMAN’S BETS (staked to win 20 points each, except in Daq Multiples)
BET 1pt win and 3pts place DUKE OF MONMOUTH (3.20 Catterick)
BET 8pts win PEARLS LEGEND (3.55 Catterick)
BET 9pts win SGT RECKLESS and 4.4pts win RANJAAN (5.10 Kempton)
DAQ MULTIPLES 10pts win on each and 5pts win double SPIRIT OF SHANKLY (nap, 2.55 Kempton) and MBHALI (3.10 Lingfield), plus 1pt win treble with DUKE OF MONMOUTH (3.20 Catterick)
