ANNIE’S POWER CAN PREVAIL AGAIN
1.40 Bangor Annie Mc earned a ‘something special’ icon after back-to-back wins. She controlled If You Say Run from two out at Wincanton on Boxing Day.
If You Say Run is 11lb better off on a sounder surface today but it had been good to soft when she was beaten over the same Wincanton CD in the autumn by Reserve Tank.
That was in Grade 2 but the winner was a loser before and after that race at both Chepstow and Newbury.
Annie Mc, who is in the mares’ novices at the Cheltenham festival, travels well and jumps well and has two years in hand on If You Say Run.
CASHEL PICK AS THYME MARCHES ON
3.15 Bangor This is another three-horse race which is actually a match. But this time the older animal, The Cashel Man, has the class form and the higher rating yet, though officially 21lb better than Minella Trump, the pair meet on level terms.
The Cashel Man was a 10-lengths winner at Newbury but his real claim to fame was on the same course at the Christmas meeting when less than two lengths off Thyme Hill at levels in the Challow Hurdle.
Thyme Hill had won the Persian War at Chepstow in October and the Ballymore trial at Cheltenham in November.
THE MAGIC TOUCH AT CLASS-3 LEVEL
3.30 Kempton Though he’s up the handicap a bit now, Touch Kick’s dropping to this grade has always been enough to land him the prize.
His record since November 2018 is 12310P102, becoming 111 if restricted to class 3, the last success off 6lb lower.
But he won seven lengths that day and his second in a class 2 last time out off 138 was when giving 23lb to the winner and beating 147 and 139 horses into third and fourth.
Will two wind ops and the application of cheekpieces return Kilfilum Cross to the form of his Kim Muir second at the Cheltenham festival? Watch the market for some help with that.
Fixed Rate likes to make all. He was last able to do it off a 10lb lower rating over a shorter trip. Jack Tudor’s claim helps but there’s still a question mark over the 3m.
‘CANOE’ LOOKS MUCH HIGHER CLASS
4.10 Southwell Padleyourowncanoe has been only a once-a-year winner (December 2018 and October 2019) since his salad says in 2017.
But much of his form has been in Graded hurdles, including fourth in the Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival.
And, when he lined up at Lingfield two weeks back, it was his first time on the Flat and on an AW surface since November, 2017. He won.
‘Canoe’ is actually the youngest in today’s race and, if Rob Hornby can get him rolling, he looks a good thing.
BACK PAPA TO BE JUST LIKE HIS DAD
5.45 Chelmsford Silvestre De Sousa is back after stints in Hong Kong and Meydan divided by a second place at Wolverhampton on Fox Power, a false start back in UK which he can rectify in the next few days. I have a particularly good word for a booking of his next Tuesday.
De Sousa’s first English winner of 2020 could even be today with Papa Power, a son of Nathaniel with Andrew Balding, whose current form figures are 11120322.
Papa ran well enough here at Chelmsford a month ago, and Nathaniels are known for making a sudden leap forward.
Express Route cost $975,000 as a yearling but has had to be gelded already, and Pyramid Place is sticking to maidens instead of going handicapping, despite having had three runs.
