ALTO ON HIGH NOTE IN CLASSIC TRIAL
Now he has a Classic voice. A horse called ‘alto’, son of a stallion called ‘highbrow’, Pao Alto was destined to reach the heights.
And he cruised into the French Derby picture at Longchamp yesterday by winning the Prix La Force trial that is going for a hat-trick in the Chantilly Classic on Sunday, July 5, by way of success for beaten horses.
Study Of Man (2018 second) and Sottsass (only fifth last year) both went on from the La Force to win the French Derby. Saonois (2013) won both La Force and Derby (Prix du Jockey Club).
Pao Alto, by the Jockey Club winner, Intello (‘highbrow’), was winning his third race in a row yesterday for Christophe Ferland and Maxime Guyon.
If a beaten horse does the hat-trick, then it would have to be Ocean Atlantique (Charles-Pierre Boudot), an eight lengths winner in October, who didn’t have the easiest of runs yesterday and finished well to be second for Andre Fabre.
Pao Alto plunged to 7-1 second favourite with Corals for the Jockey Club (Ladbrokes only 6-1), behind the favourite, Victor Ludorum, with Ocean Atlantique 8-1.
Pao Alto was 8-1 with Corals and Ladbrokes for the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas).
The Summit, as low as 7-1 for the Guineas, after beating Ecrivain and Victor Ludorum in Monday’s Fontainebleau, was 10-1 with Corals and Ladbrokes, and 11.0 in the BETDAQ Sportsbook.
In the Pouliches (1.000 Guineas), Wednesday’s Chantilly scorer, Simeen ,was shortened to 9-2 in places, but 6.0 in the BETDAQ Sportsbook while Raabihah, yesterday’s four-lengths Listed scorer at Longchamp, was generally in to 8-1.
Ladbrokes were much more impressed with Raabihah and closed her down to 5-1, giving away Simeen at 7-1. Both fillies are trained by Jean-Claude Rouget.
BOUDOT CAN CARRY THE LOOTAH HOME
⚠️ HEADS UP Pierre-Charles Boudot’s double at Longchamp yesterday put him only four short of 50 and changed the leadership of the French jockeys’ table to: Pierre-Charles Boudot 46, Christophe Soumillon 40, Maxime Guyon 37, Anthony Crastus 26, Cristian Demuro 26, Eddy Hardouin 22, Julien Auge 20.
While Soumillon has a day off today, the hungry ones, Boudot and Guyon, take five rides each on a 10-race card at Lyon Parilly.
10.45 Lyon-Parilly A classy conditions race (1m 1f). Grey Mystere’s second to Pao Alto doesn’t look so bad now after that one won yesterday’s Prix La Force.
But Fabrice Chappet’s San Fabrizio has Pierre Charles Boudot booked to pilot a colt who was third to Victor Ludorum last September before that one won the Lagardere. I took 5.0 in the BETDAQ Sportsbook.
11.15 Lyon-Parilly Synchrone (Angela Daifi riding for Jean-Pierre Gauvin) won for a woman rider last September before being beaten little more than a length in a big field on the Chantilly Polytrack. An 11.0 outsider.
12.15 Lyon-Parilly Woot City got within a length of Fontainebleau winner The Summit here at Lyon over a mile in September, and is big at 26.0.
This is three furlongs further but should be ideal for a son of Wootton Bassett, who is also represented in this be Hellenistique (3.25 in the BETDAQ Sportsbook).
Top jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot rides Lootah, out of a mare by Lawman, French Derby winner himself and sire of five Group-1 winners. I just give him the edge at 3.5.
1.58 Lyon-Parilly Mille Et Mille (15.0 offer), the Prix Du Cadran winner of 2015, drops back to a mile and a half in an interesting line-up for such a small field in this Listed.
My choice at 5.0 in the BETDAQ Sportsbook) Pappalino, third in the Exbury with the form working out well, likes it very soft, as it is today.
Skyward, looking for a four-timer, has Stephane Pasquier up for Fabrice Chappet, who also saddles San Huberto.
