11-4 NAP AND 14-1 WINNER: The amazing Daqman was flying again yesterday. He landed his nap, Bennys Mist (WON 11-4), followed by Flying Award (WON 14-1) in the Somerset National, in consecutive races at Wincanton.

55-1 DOUBLE UP IN HALF AN HOUR: The pair made up a double of more than 55-1 in his Daq Multiples inside half an hour, with his Irish big-race bet, Baily Green (2nd 5-1), beaten less than a length for a 336-1 treble.

114 POINTS PROFIT IN TWO DAYS: Daqman’s form figures up to date since Wednesday evening’s spree in BETDAQ races at Kempton Park are 112112. He has made a profit in the two days of 114 points.

The drop back to the dross today tells its own story. It’s an old, old story. It is that racing still will not appreciate that just one taste of quality a day is a feast for punters and a boost for the sport.

Just one quality race lifts the gloom, provides a talking point and a headline, brings on the star trainers and jocks, gives the punter a chance to assess reliable form.

Yes, times have changed since Phil Bull warned the industry on this point – and got short shrift for doing so – but assessment of betting turnover has proved it again and again over the years.

Despite this age of betting shops as slot-machine alleys, and of the internet as a massive casino, it remains the moan of the many that racing’s money pours unceasingly into poor racing for bad animals.

It can be mended. Newbury had decent fields for Wednesday, including the Harwell Trophy. Kempton Park had a Fast-Track qualifier in a series of BETDAQ-sponsored races.

Then, yesterday, a terrific card at Wincanton lifted the gloom, with a thrillling Somerset National as its main feature.

It is forever trotted out in ‘explanation’ that we have to make room for modest horses and that they keep the game going but prizemoney better concentrated would lift the return to small-time owners who would consequently reinvest in better-quality horses.

This has to be right, since their moan, too, is how hard it is to make ends meet when the cash returns are so low.

And it has to be right when the trade paper carries not a word about today’s cards on its front page, but talk only of the Guineas and Royal Ascot. What else can they do – can we all do – but look forward?

Musselburgh has its biggest fields for its two best races today (class-3 events), boosted by the ground. The good-to-soft surface is a welcome change from the recent boglike conditions.

That’s partly why 14 horses are travelling a total of 4,414 miles – those from south of Yorkshire – for around £26,000 in win prizemoney. The petrol bill must be enormous.

I can’t even count the cost of the three Irish runners, and I’m not sure they count in the races either. Let’s have a look.

While Clever Cookie and Sky Khan (long absence) are still emerging novices, Discovery Bay (2.45) has the experience in the book. And how?

He was the ‘moral’ over CD, giving weight to the winner in a class 2, when beaten by the subsequent, Willow’s Saviour, who took the prestigious Ladbroke hurdle off 9lb higher.

Titus Bolt likes to go on, and Clever Cookie is keen, so there should be enough pace on for Discovery Bay, who has the McCoy drive to help him for the first time.

McCoy also teams up with a new partner in Louth-trained Bar de Ligne (3.20), a decent novice who came to Musselburgh and ran third in his first handicap, same trip, same class, but soft going.

The sounder surface should help if his past success on good and good to soft is any guide. He will also be travelling the right way round, having won three times right-handed.

The Irish raider Maggio seems high in the handicap, and is being claimed off. Drumlang has done well enough but was 31lb inferior to Bar De Ligne on hurdles form.

Rudemeister came to form in a tongue-tie at Hexham but looked very one-paced at Wetherby, and Storming Gale – a once a year horse – has never done well going clockwise.

Tony McCoy has 50% records for both Brian Ellison and Steve Gollings, which further boosts a ‘one of them must surely win’ attitude to Discovery Bay and Bar De Ligne. If both won, I’d look a fool not to have ‘left a pound’ on the double.
