BETDAQ EXCHANGE MAKES IT EASIER: A tough day today in the mud at Newbury with ‘the trickiest race of the year so far’, says Daqman, made easier by low, low BETDAQ betting exchange overrounds and 0% commission for new customers.
TOMORROW: Greatwood Gold Cup day tomorrow among six Saturday meetings in England and Ireland.
UNDER THE DOCTOR’S ORDERS
⭕ 3.23 Newbury: The Newbury meeting has cut up badly, with just 39 declared all day to squelch through the mud.
Ben Pauling has boggling form figures in the last two weeks, including the streak: 1310141131131111, still standing, for 11-19, which is 58%.
The Good Doctor, a soft-ground winner in France, was short-headed by The Famous Five here at Newbury in December and the son of Doctor Dino looks poised to go one better here, and incidentally boost the Five’s chances in the trophy chase later on.
CHAMPAGNE IS HARD TO FIND
⭕ 5.05 Newbury: This 3m handicap hurdle is probably the trickiest race of the year so far. This morning the bookies had four horses within a single-point range! But BETDAQ offers for the entire field totted up to only 104 total percentage.
Pauling and jockey Jones – the two Bens – could now have Champagne Twist ready but he may be a better horse at 2m 4f on a sounder surface.
A pound above him are Gamesters Guy and Saint Palais, a useful chaser in 2021, recently dropped from Graded hurdles to score in a class-4 novice, and now on a mark 15lb below his fencing level.
Gamesters Guy, given 127 before fifth in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham, was lifted another 3lb afterwards, so no help from the handicapper for this 3m but encouragement in his pedigree.
Wonderful Eagle was also nudged up after a Cheltenham run in December.
Magical King has been placed 8-10 but won only one of them and his current run of 2322 suggests he’s just that bit too high in the ratings.
Ramo, 11 times placed from 14 hurdles starts, has been out of form for more than a year now.
The market will tell us what is ‘expected’ on this switch back from chasing. I took bits of 8.0 Champagne Twist and 26 Ramo to get involved early.
FAMOUS FIVE FIND TREASURE
⭕ 4.33 Newbury (Geoffrey Gilbey Trophy): In a similar near-2m chase on soft in December, Mount Tempest carried the weight he has today to win at Sandown but in a weaker race for the level.
It was his second success there over fences, both under Harry Skelton, but a 7lb claimer is entrusted with the steering today, switching to a left-handed track.
Mount Tempest beat a small field at Wetherby, but was noticeably not fluent going left-handed.
Charlie Deutsch gave The Famous Five a superb ride over fences here at the Christmas meeting (Ballybreeze pulled up). The seven-year-old scored on soft-heavy when hurdling.
Rath Gaul Hill is also a Newbury winner but is worse off here with the runner-up that day, Duhallow Tommy.
Rath Gaul Hill has not been on a racecourse since the big Ayr meeting last April and his yard hasn’t had a winner for 13 weeks.
LUCKY MOON READY TO SHINE
⭕ 4.10 Lingfield Ralph Beckett is not only striking at 100% right now (2-2) but is getting 100% from his runners, according to the Racing Post RTF which shows to what level of form each horse is running.
Beckett has booked Hector Crouch at Lingfield for the unexposed Moon Over Miami, who was 2-2 last Spring and has had two starts this year to set him up for this two-miler.
He’s getting 9lb from Roaring Legend, a tough and versatile warrior, who mixes Flat turf with Flat AW, hurdles and even a chase!
William Mullins sends over a similar sort but two years older in Mr Escobar and Gordon Elliott saddles Ted Hastings, well handicapped off 80 compared with his hurdles rating of 127.
🌙 LUCKY OMEN? The moon in clear skies will be helpful tonight as, once in a generation, you can see seven planets are in alignment and it won’t happen again until 2040.
⭕ 7.45 Southwell The Camelot filly Lady Vivian has Rossa Ryan booked by Beckett. The Irish Oaks entry was an 82,000gns foal who made double that as a yearling.
The big yards want her scalp via the gelding Tribal Act, already a winner this year for Charlie Appleby, the stamina-bred filly Luxmundi (William Haggas) and a Nathaniel debutant, Wise Counsellor (Andrew Balding).
