The day started with spotting his apprentice find on Spirit Of The Breeze. Financier just missed the bull’s-eye (2nd 9-1), and Gloriously Sassy (2nd 5-1) added another touch to the seconditis.

⭕ 2.05 Epsom: Another boy rider you can trust with your money is Tommie Jakes (50% strike rate with two-year-olds).
Who Is Alice was drifting this morning in the face of support for Tommie’s mount Gascony, well bred for the speed he needs here and on the up before aiming high at a class 2 in the mud at Goodwood.
The son of Pinatubo (six wins in a row as a juvenile) out of a Galileo mare, Gascony was backed with bookies this morning from 5-1. I got close to 4-1 on Betdaq Betting Exchange but expect him to start favourite.
FLOWERHEAD HAS THE FORM
⭕ 4.45 Newbury Flowerhead (5th) and Daneh of Dandy (9th) drop back a furlong after being extended in the Princess Margaret Stakes (6f) at Ascot in July.
Flowerhead had beaten the Princess Margaret runner-up, Staya, when second (on the wrong side of the course) in the Queen Mary (5f).
We need to see Entailed again, after her tail-flashing finish to break her maiden at Sandown last week.
I can’t have the grey filly Sapphire Steps, with trainer Richard Hannon deep in recession with a current score of 1-52, now 33 runners without a win.

20-1 TORNADO DARK HORSE
⭕ 7.00 Newmarket Previous winners, Dutch Decoy (2022) and Bopedro (2023), clash in this renewal but they are eight and nine years old now.
Dutch Decoy – who may have had his share of wins this year – was last of six in today’s race 12 months ago.
Bopedro still has a big shout after his third in the Royal Hunt Cup and at the John Smiths meeting at York. BETDAQ 6.57.
Stepping up to a Listed was too much for CD-winner Elarak the last day, though Charles Hills broke back with a 14-1 strike last night after 23 August losers.
Mr Chaplin attracted support this morning as ‘unexposed.’ It’s a year since he scored at Goodwood but he’s been aimed high at big prices this year, after being gelded.
The grey Dark Tornado is the only four-year-old in the field; seemed progressive in the Spring and tried a Group 2, the Summer Mile, at Ascot last month.
He gave weight and a beating to Sterling Knight on the Rowley Mile course here in the Spring and could be a bit of each-way value at around 20-1 BETDAQ offers this morning.

Stay off the beach! Try Wild Waves instead. One of the favourites, Plage De Havre – ‘plage’ means beach – was seemingly pulled out of next week’s Ebor Handicap this morning.
If that’s confirmed, and the Old Newton Cup winner is out, that leaves Andrew Balding with Subsequent and Wild Waves for the £300,000 handicap.
Balding is running second in the trainers’ table on £4.3m won behind Aidan O’Brien, who is leading on £5m.
But Balding’s 132 winners total is already only 33 behind his grand total for the whole of 2024.
MIGHTY TO PROVE ALMIGHTY
⭕ 2.15 Carlisle Mighty Magnus (Michael Dods) has improved in each of his three starts, all at Ayr, and might be good enough to give away the weight against seemingly modest rivals.
He was last of six on debut in July when the good to soft ground may have counted against him but has done much better since in finishing fourth and winning well last time out in a similar small field as today when he made all the running to win by three lengths. The bare form doesn’t amount to a lot but he seems progressive and is a spot of value here on the Betdaq Betting Exchange.
Valor Spirit was heading the morning market after three solid placed efforts and might well improve for the step up in trip over a tougher circuit. He looks a bigger danger than Dacres Cross who hails from the Kevin Ryan yard (1 winner from last 29).
HOME TIME
⭕ 5.00 Carlisle I’ll stick with Michael Dods to book end the Cumbrian card as he looks to have a good chance here with Homeland who seems to have been treated fairly by the handicapper who has raised him just a pound for his win at Ripon last time out.
The drop back in trip is offset by this being a much tougher circuit and his main market rivals are not arriving in the best of form.
In fact, the biggest danger may come from sprightly 10-year-old Jewel Maker who continues to be competitive off his current mark.
BLAIZE OF GLORY
⭕ 8.40 Hamilton On a day where it seems more about keeping the powder dry Royal Blaize stands out as the day’s nap – we just need to wait until the last race of the day.
The Ewan Williams trained runner is taken to shrug off his 5lb hike for a four length Ayr win on Saturday and can strike again quickly off what now looks an absurdly lenient mark.
