EXETER SURVIVES THE STORMS: They are out on the tracks this afternoon but not so much for racing, more for inspections (between noon and 2pm today) with major meetings tomorrow at Kempton and Warwick in doubt after last night’s storms. Daqman finds bets from Exeter and Newcastle which had survived before his deadline this morning.

PAPA PAUL IN MAIDEN PLOY

RAINING CHAMPION! From an overall 14 rides yesterday (Ffos Las), today (Southwell a wash-out ) and tomorrow (Warwick inspecting at 2pm today), champion jockey Sean Bowen so far emerges with one day’s racing and a 12-1 winner.

Jockeys can no longer double book, so today’s Exeter meeting is a lucky break for Harry Cobden, who has four rides, though his Saturday card at Kempton must also pass an inspection at 2pm today.

⭕ 1.32 Exeter An in-form Paul Nicholls (10-39) has Cobden on Pourquoi Pas Papa, opting for this maiden rather than waiting on Kempton’s inspection for tomorrow.

That avoids a clash with Dan Skelton’s Precious Man and he should take care of Johnny’s Jury, absent more than a year and with his trainer, Jamie Snowden, 0-15.

Pourquoi Pas Papa represents a Paul Nicholls ploy to run four-year-olds at this time of year, getting 13lb from the field.

The gelding will have been well schooled by David Cottin in France before moving to Ditcheat and being put straight into a class-2 juvenile at Sandown.

FAIRY TALE OF CONSISTENCY

⭕ 2.32 Exeter The grey Good Friday Fairy, a favourite ride for Sam Twiston-Davies (form together 1121), is trained five miles away from the Dorset landmark called Pilsdon Pen.

The Jeremy Scott trained rival of that name has won only at Wincanton and his chasing record has not much improved on his hurdles rating, so I think Fairy can put distance between them on the track, too.

He has flourished with five strikes over fences, up 19lb last year, and a good winner here in a feature chase in November.

Followcato was a lucky scorer at Ludlow when two close rivals fell and his nearest pursuer pecked and became unbalanced.

Bay City Roller, a hurdles winner two years back, goes well fresh but needs it heavy for his debut over fences.

GREAT CHANCE ON DEBUT

⭕ 3.30 Newcastle Great Mates was given an easy time in the autumn, building up to her handicap debut. That’s happening here today with Paul Mulrennan booked.

The grey mare Enola Grey, a Wolverhampton favourite, doesn’t put two races together and Electric Avenue, well behind her last month, has never won this high in the handicap.
