JOHNSTON SWINGS INTO ACTION
⭕ 1.50 Newmarket (1m 2f handicap): This is the time of year when a river of Charlie and Mark Johnston winners often start to flow and end up a flood at Glorious Goodwood.
Team Johnston had two winners on Wednesday and three more yesterday, and they’ve had six winners in nine years of this 10f handicap, none of them favourite; in fact at SPs from 13-2 to 25-1.
They have Knightswood perfectly placed in the handicap, Frankie Dettori’s first handicap ride since his ‘sabbatical’ from Team Gosden.
A bit keen at this level at Royal Ascot but was still second in the final furlong and ran better than the final placing.
Yanafis also ran well at Ascot, eighth in the Britannia, the mile run suggesting this step up to 1m 2f would help.
There’s not a lot between Swilcan Bridge and War Horse, winner and third at Epsom on Derby day. All those I’ve mentioned are getting weight from the Charlie Appleby pair, New London and Natural World.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 5.4 Yanafis, 7.8 Knightswood
FLOTUS IS A WORTHY FAVOURITE
⭕ 2.40 York (6f Group-3 fillies and mares): Flotus had Benefit and Teresa Mendoza behind when just denied in the Cecil Frail Stakes, a notch below this level. The winner has scored again since.
Flotus stepped up on that when leading in the centre of a big field for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, finishing third behind Perfect Power. Zain Claudette, winner of the Lowther Stakes last August, was fifth on her first run back.
Benefit franked the Flotus form when winning a Salisbury Listed but the runner-up, a length down at the line, was giving the winner 13lb. The handicapper’s verdict is to have Flotus on 111, Benefit on 104, meeting today at levels.
BETDAQ value: 3.65 Flotus
THIS CAN BE THE DAY FOR KNIGHT
⭕ 3.00 Newmarket (1m 6f handicap): Mark Johnston has won two of these (out of four) and Soapy Stevens has been in good form this year.
Trawlerman was one of the Royal Ascot rides that Frankie Dettoti would rather forget (dwelt start); he’s up two furlongs, with James Doyle taking over.
Candleford has been punished 11lb for winning the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot, making him 13lb worse off with the third horse home, Contact.
The best Midnight Legacy form is at Epsom, and this is quite a different track.
Summer’s Knight cruised clear over 1m 6f on firm in September and was not disgraced on his first target since, fifth in the Northumberland Plate behind Trueshan, when Spirit Mixer was second but is now 8lb worse off. Zoffee won the consolation Northumberland Vase.
Betdaq value 11.0 Summer’s Knight, 14.5 Soapy Stevens
INSPIRAL FORTUNE COOKIE No 11
⭕ 3.35 Newmarket (Falmouth Stakes: 1m Group-1 fillies and mares): Inspiral will probably be no price but hopefully continues the run of Fortune Cookies. She would be winner number 11 for 10 big-race strikes and a profit creeping up to the 200-point mark.
Though she had been absent 252 days, we stood by the May Hill and Fillies Mile winner as a 2yo and, sure enough, she fired first time back, with an impressive Coronation Stakes win at Royal Ascot.
Sandrine (7th) and Prosperous Voyage (10th) got nowhere near her blistering speed. Prosperous Voyage had twice been beaten by Inspiral last year but was still a disappointment after splitting Cachet and Tuesday in the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas.
The older filly, Sibila Spain, a Frankel – she was last year’s Diane fourth – has won mainly with cut in the ground, including the Muguet, but went right away from them in the Liancourt last backend at Longchamp on a sound surface.
MAQUINA TARGETS THE SAME RACE
⭕ 4.10 Newmarket (5f handicap): La Maquina won this race off the same mark after a break last year and returns to England after another break since running in Bahrain.
BETDAQ value 9.0 La Maquina
