DAQMAN LANDS 12-1 WINNER ON BETDAQ: Enable, the filly Daqman found at 25-1 for the Epsom Oaks, won the Yorkshire version yesterday from another of his Fortune Cookies, Coronet (2ND 16-1). But the game moves on and the value was in bagging another big-odds handicap winner, Tangled (WON 15-2), which he tipped at 13.0 on BETDAQ.
Wednesday
WON 4-1 ULYSSES (International, bull’s-eye bet)
WON 4-6 CRACKSMAN (Great Voltigeur, banker nap)
Thursday
WON 15-2 TANGLED (from 13.0 on BETDAQ)
WON 1-4 ENABLE (Fortune Cookies 1-2 with Coronet 16-1)
THAT’S THE 70 UP AGAINST PRICEWISE: Tangled took Daqman into a 70-12 lead over Pricewise, 316 points ahead, and all to play for again today in the 1.55 and 3.00 at York.
FRANKIE FOR FIRST-RACE FLYER
1.55 York This one invariably goes to the four-year-olds (five out of six). Three-year-olds have scored only once in the decade but are having a strong season.
Among them today, Game Starter is progressive, but this trip could find him out and I prefer 10.5 BETDAQ bet Londinium, who beat the King George V runner-up and the Queen’s Vase third with a typical Mark Johnston drive at Goodwood.
Al Neksh (11.5 offers) was a staying-on second when a runaway winner wasn’t for the catching here at York over shorter at the May meeting. Comes back fresh again today for Frankie Dettori.
Amazing Red and Landsman both have to step up in class. The lightly-raced York CD winner Appeared can come out better than his old rival Red Galileo (current score 1-1), who has an off-putting strike rate (1-24).
DARTMOUTH LOVES YORKSHIRE
2.25 York (Lonsdale Cup) The gamble on Sir Michael Stoute’s Mori went astray yesterday in a pathetically slow pace (time of the race 9 secs over) but he could be back today with 5.1 BETDAQ offer Dartmouth, Yorkshire Cup winner on this course.
The double of Yorkshire Cup and Lonsdale is not done because of the penalty but Moore could snatch it for reasons that count against his main rivals.
Moore switches from the forecast favourite, Thomas Hobson, who will need a special ride by Jim Crowley on one that gets behind early on. Not something you can do easily on this course, even at this 2m, and that’s a short trip for the Ascot Stakes winner (2m 4f).
Dal Harraild was behind Dartmouth in the Hardwicke Stakes. He won over 1m 6f here at York in May but the second and third haven’t scored in a race since 2015, so it was a bit of a gift. St Michel needs firm ground, which is why he is heading for the Melbourne Cup.
GOSDEN DAB HAND WITH FILLIES
3.00 York (City of York Stakes) Three-year-olds go for a hat-trick in this, with a single-figure stall successful nine years out of 10, albeit including smaller fields.
The Classic season is strongly represented by 1,000 Guineas third Daban (stall 12) and Jersey Stakes third Mubtasim (in 4), with Daban (7.2 in the BETDAQ orange as I write) trying to make it a hat-trick for fillies, and John Gosden has a plethora of them this season, headed of course by Enable.
The older mare Spangled (16.0 offers) won an autumn Group 3 at Doncaster among three from five last season and wouldn’t be running here to blot the black type for the Cheveley Park Stud.
So Beloved was second in this last year, and Suedois is a hidden horse since seven races in his losing run of 12 were in Group 1.
BATTAASH DASH OF THE IMPROVER
3.35 York (Nunthorpe Stakes) Lady Aurelia ran right away from Profitable and Marsha on very fast ground for the Kings Stand, with no fewer than NINE of this field beaten off.
That brings this down to a straight fight with Battaash, who has improved 22lb since June, and had SIX of the same also-rans behind him in the King George at Goodwood, with the same second and third, but on the soft.
Battaash comes out best on collateral form between the two but has to give weight to Lady Aurelia, which is an equaliser.
Wesley Ward claims a ‘fastest horse in the world’ tag for his Lady, and declares of the duel with Battaash: ‘It will be settled on the battlefield.’
The handicapper’s verdict (122-122) means that Lady Aurelia goes into the race with a length to spare, in receipt of 3lb.
The omens are for Battaash, who wears the same colours as the 5f York record holder, Dayjur. The BETDAQ odds this morning: 2.66 offers about each. I’ll always go for the improver.
LA RAV FORM BOOSTED YESTERDAY
4.50 York Though a 19.5 BETDAQ offer this morning, Appointed has a high cruising speed which may allow him to drop back from his win over further on the course a month ago. The 1m 4f on the last day was a trip too far.
La Rav (7.0 in the orange exchanges) was placed at Chelmsford as a prep for this in a race of winners behind yesterday’s big-handicap runner-up, Qassem.
