DARING DAQMAN OPPOSES O’BRIEN ‘GOOD THING’: Daqman is going nap against Pricewise and against Aidan O’Brien at York today. Same horse. Same race. Same daring Daqman, who doubles the nap with another ‘good thing’ at the Newmarket July meeting.
50-WINNERS WEEKEND TILT AGAINST PRICEWISE: Daqman goes into Day 2 at Newmarket leading Pricewise 45-16 (Daqman +69, Pricewise -72 to a single-unit level stake). Daqman wants to make it 50 wins for the season with his weekend hits.
MAKSAB TO TAKE HOME THE SILVER
1.50 Newmarket (Silver Bunbury Cup) Swift Approval, winner of this in 2016 and fourth last year, is one of four horses within a range of 0.7 points in the BETDAQ orange this morning, and a fifth is 0.3 points away!
Only Zap and Truth or Dare are not wanted in this tightest possible market, which retains its betting value on BETDAQ, thanks to a low, low 104% overround.
One of the four vying for the favourite spot, War Glory, has never scored on turf and his last AW success was two years ago.
Gallipoli and Saluti have run well at this level but never won higher than class 4.
Maksab, a 6.4 offer, gets weight from them the rest of the field and is a course-and-distance winner twice, including in this grade.
ON THE WINGS OF A HAT-TRICK
2.25 Newmarket (Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes) After Roly Poly and Clemmie, Aidan O’Brien bids for a hat-trick in this Group 2 with Gossamer Wings.
Gossamer Wings was second in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, where Roly Poly was only eighth, and the 2014 winner of this was only sixth.
Previous recent winners have also included winner, sixth and seventh in the Albany, in which Main Edition beat La Pelosa last month, with Angel’s Hideaway (raced on far side) fourth, Pretty Polyanna fifth and Chicas Amigas seventh.
Unusually, the handicapper thinks the Albany was a better race than the Queen Mary: he has Main Edition on 106 and Gossamer Wings on 101.
But Gossamer Wings connections had the third filly home in the Albany, Fairyland, who had earlier won the Marble Hill. So I took BETDAQ 7.0 on Wings (and a prayer).
WE NEED TO SEE MOORE OF ZAAKI
3.00 Newmarket Mark Johnston who won this 10-furlong handicap four times in a row (2013-16), has left two in today.
His pair, Communique and Poet’s Prince, finished one-two in the London Gold Cup, with pacemaker Chief Ironside in third.
All three were put up 8lb but Poet’s Prince, who earlier beat Desert Wind and Zaaki at Chelmsford, has been dropped 5lb after modest efforts since.
Desert Wind ran a great race, fourth, in a big-field Britannia at Royal Ascot, while Zaaki was sent into Pattern company there, fourth in a Group 3.
Zaaki was the better backed this morning, though even stronger in the BETDAQ market was Wissahickon, who beat Beringer at York, with Communique and Poet’s Prince well in the rear.
With Wissahickon caned 7lb by the handicapper for York, he now looks close to Zaaki, who might stay on the stronger for Ryan Moore at 4.6
COULD IT BE LOVE IS OVERRATED
3.15 York Aidan O’Brien who has won only 4million euros with his three-year-olds this year (get a grip, Aidan!) sends Could It Be Love up to the Knavesmire.
The race comes 20 minutes before the Newmarket reappearance of Alpha Centauri, who beat her in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
Could it be Love has been placed again – twice – since then and is looking a ‘nearly horse’, bridesmaid a t the t op level.
A freegoing sort, she is dropped back a furlong but has only ever won just her maiden, always a bad sign.
I watched Xenobia give her 8lb and a beating at Fairyhouse, when Could It Be Love finished a couple of lengths in front of 92 rated but here she is off 112.
Meanwhile, Pretty Baby’s Listed-race successes have worked out well and she is on the upgrade (around 2-1 offers this morning).
Her 102 mark puts her 10lb behind Could It Be Love, but wE know frOm that Fairyhouse Race that the ratings could be misleading.
ALPHA FEMALE IS FORMIDABLE
3.35 Newmarket (July Stakes) Clemmie, who beat Nyaleti as a two-yea-rold, tries to emulate Roly Poly who won this the season after taking the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (2.25). She would give Aidan O’Brien a hat-trick in the race.
But she faces a formidable opponent in Alpha Centauri, winner of the Curragh 1,000 Guineas who slammed Threading six lengths in the Coronation Stakes.
