DETTORI’S BEST-YET DISH OF PASTA

The greatest ever treble. The holiday of a lifetime. Whatever you’d like to call it, Frankie Dettori pulled off a hat-trick of major races in France yesterday, and made seaside donkeys of a classic field of two-year-olds.

Swerving the Ebor festival of four days at York, Frankie completed a stunning week in Deauville by winning the Prix Morny on the American filly Campanelle.

Campanelle has two distinct meanings. Whether it was named after the bellflower or the bell-shaped pasta, it spelled another Group-1 winner to the Italian-born ace and that meant the flying leap of glory which so often punctuates his incredible career.

But it was also a leap of faith! He’d landed a double on Mishriff and Palace Pier last weekend, and dared to stay on and miss major prizes in England, walking the planks of Deauville promenade to wait for Sunday Morny.

The day dawned with the going heavy so, theoretically, totally against the Royal Ascot rocket. But trainer Wesley Ward was not concerned.

Neither was Campanelle, who landed him a Queen Mary and Morny double for the second time.

Campanelle made all the running, never headed, and went right away in the last 400 metres.

Could she come back to Europe for a Guineas or is she an unbeatable sprinter of the class of Black Caviar, world champion of 2013?

‘Mile!’ yelled Frankie down the phone, according to trainer Ward, who may now target the Breeders Cup. She could be his best-ever pasta!

Mishriff is being backed for the Arc, presenting Dettori with a problem other jockeys would love to have. To ride Mishriff or his beloved dual Arc winner Enable, who has her next race on September 5.

GO TO WAR AGAINST THE FAVOURITE

⭕ 2.50 Southwell Methag’s form at around 2m 4f in 2019 was 121. She had a quiet run back on the Flat in June for Alex Hales who has a 23% strike rate this year. An 8.2 win and 2.5 place on BETDAQ this morning.

Dan Skelton is currently striking at 50% but this race comes after likely-favourite Dog Of War’s second wind op. The first one didn’t seem to help very much, even with a tongue-tie added and he’s still a maiden.

Perfect City finished best of all when pipped a neck here at Southwell in August but it’s a worry that he’s in and out, seldom running two races the same, a big let-down at Stratford when 2-1 favourite, beaten 37 lengths.

Skiddaw Valleys won a small-field race at Perth when his main revival departed early on; otherwise he had a long reputation as a bridesmaid – 3222 – and has been well beaten since.

Malangen won over the CD for David Pipe when dropped 11lb this year but the handicapper quickly restored some of his burden again, and he wouldn’t want the rain to get into the ground.

BETDAQ 5.4 TEL’ART MAY BE VALUE..

⭕ 4.25 Southwell Nico De Boinville is up for the solo ride on Tel’Art at one of trainer Ben Pauling’s favourite tracks (21% strike rate).

Nico is 121 on the six-year-old grey, the first of them here at Southwell over the CD. But an overall rise of 19lb means moving up in grade.

That’s the reverse of the move by Tom Lacey in dropping Yes No Maybe So down from class 2 after back-to-back wins at Uttoxeter, both under Jonathan Burke, his jockey today .

Despite their success, both Tel’Art and ‘Maybe So’ are still below Western Rules in the weights. He’s a once a year horse at best these days, now aged 10.

I thought Tel’Art and Yes No Maybe So would be vying for favourite, and it would be a case of guessing which one, ‘yes or no.?’

But I was forgetting for a moment the amazing value in the BETDAQ offers, which totalled only 106% for this race.

It left me with no choice but to take the huge 5.4 against Tel’art climbing the ladder. It’s a good price for a ‘maybe so.’

STAKE ACCLAIM AT 12.0 ON BETDAQ

⭕ 5.15 Bath Horses behind Hlaitan when he was third at Newbury in early July have won three races since.

His trainer, Hugo Palmer, who had a winner on Saturday, is clearly keen to strike today, putting first-time cheekpieces on Hlaitan and William Buick on his back.

Mr Tyrrell has slipped a few pounds in the handicap but has moderate form with cut in the ground. Medieval is 4400200300 with ‘soft’ in the going return.

And Song Of The Isles looks up against it, returning after only three days off. Hlaitan hovvered around 2-1 this morning.

⭕ 5.25 Ayr Dubai Acclaim, who put back-to-back wins together last autumn, scored here late last month from the prolific winner Jackhammer (4-6), and looks value at 12.0 on BETDAQ with give underfoot.

Ulshaw Bridge has dropped down the handicap but there is no evidence for him as a soft-ground horse. Eagle Court won at Pontefract on firm.

BUICK v CROWLEY IN BATH BATTLE

⭕ 6.50 Bath Crystal Pegasus, runner-up to Brilliant Light over 1m 3f at Wolverhampton, received a boost on Saturday when the winner beat hat-trick seeker, Tenbury Wells, at Sandown.

Just like Brilliant Light did on Saturday, Crystal Pegasus is dropping back a quarter of a mile. William Buick takes over from Cieren Fallon.

Jim Crowley, leading rider at Bath on percentages, is here to partner Moomba, narrowly beaten at Glorious Goodwood but, like Crystal Pegasus, still a maiden.

Firm-ground winner on the course on the last day, the grey Ridgeway has to make the switch to soft terrain today if he is to boss the two maidens.
