ALL-THE-WAY WIN FOR 7-2 NAP: Daqman’s nap, The Nephew (WON 7-2), made all under Tony McCoy for an easy success at Market Rasen yesterday to bring the Daqman profits to just shy of 68 points over the weekend, after his fifth winning Bull’s-Eye Bet on Saturday.
BETDAQ TRIO OF RACES TONIGHT: This afternoon’s racing welcomes the return of Noel Fehily to the saddle at Newton Abbot and tonight’s features three races at Windsor which spotlight the BETDAQ range of World Cup bets. English racing starts at 2.15, finishing at 8.50.. so punters have extra time!
ALMOST MADE FOR FEHILY TO STAR
There are twin reasons for a bet at Newton Abbot. Yes, I’m punning on the horse’s name but I really think that Noel Fehily has a big chance of a winner on his return from injury.
And that the horse he rides, Almost Gemini (4.45), has been given a big chance by the handicapper in this handicap hurdle over 2m 6f.
First of all, I’ve noticed that jockeys returning from an enforced holiday, when it was no fault of their own, are often lined up with a winner on their first ride back.
And Fehily has been gifted an opportunity by the handicapper who – strangely when you consider the form of a hurdler who is only five-years-old – has dropped Almost Gemini a full 10lb in one go.
In fact, he is down almost a stone on his initial mark, following placed efforts in novice events at Wetherby and Taunton, when the handicapper decided he was a 113.
But Almost Gemini was then pushed up a few furlongs for his first handicap, a three-miler at Uttoxeter, not fancied one iota at 20-1 but kept to the same course and distance three weeks later and the same trip again, blinkered for the first time, in June.
Almost Gemini is high in the handicap today but that’s because the 10lb reduction in his mark is being used by trainer Charlie Mann to drop the grey down a grade, and he’s back to the trip which saw him beaten only a length at Wetherby in March. I could get 6.4 on BETDAQ this morning.
Since being booked for Almost Gemini, Fehily has picked up an earlier ride on the outsider Tempest River (3.45) for Ben Case, whose only runner this year was a winner. We need to back Tempest River; we don’t want to be on the wrong horse in this situation.
5.6 NAP ON BETDAQ CARD TONIGHT
Here’s a race of future champions. Jockeys are in the spotlight after Christophe Soumillon’s German Derby stroll and a Paul Hanagan Eclipse ride up for tactical honours alongside Louis Van Gaal’s goalkeeping masterstroke.
In the BETDAQ-sponsored opener tonight are three young star riders, one – or all? – of whom could be top of the jockeys’ table one day soon, so rare are their talents.
‘Baby Run’ rider William Twiston-Davies has 19 winners this year since he switched to the Flat, but Oisin Murphy has 41 in a season to be remembered as his last with a claim.
And the new babe making them all run is little titch Cam Hardie, who could actually weigh out at 7st 7lb! Cam landed my Bull’s-Eye Bet with Velox on Saturday, giving him three wins from four, which he carries forward to this Windsor opener.
5.50 Windsor (BETDAQ World Cup Nil-Nil Results Apprentice Handicap)
Only Cam among the top-weights in this can claim. He gives Jay Bee Blue a 5lb better chance as he attempts to get back to winning ways having not won since November of last year.
He was previously rated as high as 80 up to January so it is not inconceivable for him to be able to win off a mark of 75.
Putin makes his 101st appearance this evening and with the application of Blinkers and a tongue tie, he looks to have improved slightly. He will need to improve a little more to be serious in this race tonight but he is not without a chance.
The probable favourite for the race, Atlantis Crossing has been dropping consistently in the handicap since being rated 80 and should, in theory, be well ahead of the handicapper. However, I have a slight reservation about his liking to the turf with all of his 6 wins coming on the All Weather. The preference is for Jay Bee Blue at 5.5 on Betdaq.
6.50 Windsor (BETDAQ % World Cup Correct Scores Claiming Stakes)
Kieren Fallon and George Baker team up with an ex French recruit, Koliakhova, and if she takes to the quick ground, she could be anything. The big issue however, is there there is no form to go by on this sort of ground and in the absence of that, the selection has to go to Pershing.
Marco Botti won the race 12 months ago and Pershing is taking a drop in class and if repeating the form of his Yarmouth run in April, he will take a lot of beating.
7.20 Windsor (BETDAQ Exchange % Multiples During World Cup Handicap)
A competitive handicap to conclude the three BETDAQ sponsored races with several to chose from. I’ve narrowed it down to two, one for the win market and one for the place market.
Firstly, a tentative place selection foes to Gladiatrix who drops back to a Class 4 contest having run in Class 3 and Class 1 races previously this year and could go well at a big price.
Hannah’s Turn looks a solid performer for the win market with the very useful claimer, Marc Monaghan on board. She won quite well last time out at Haydock and takes a slight step up in class, however, judging on that win, she should be more than capable of moving up the grade.
