MINDING O’BRIEN’S BUSINESS..
1.40 Naas Ryan Moore is here to ride five for Aidan O’Brien, including Actress (1.40) in this one. Her entries are for the big Sales races in the autumn, so one or two here could be further forward. Watch the BETDAQ market.
The big-money buy in the race is 185,000-euros Now You’re Talking, a Zoffany filly trained Joseph O’Brien and ridden by Ana O’Brien. It’s a family day out at Naas!
3.55 Naas (Mooresbridge Stakes) Moore is mainly on the premises for Minding in the Mooresbridge, now named after Camelot, with trainer O’Brien unbeaten in the race in seven years (won 6; NR 1)
This early Group-2 prize was won by Camelot in 2013 and his Breeder’s Cup winner Found last year.
Now here’s Aidan’s £2m earner, Minding, winner of eight from 12 – never out of the frame – including the English 1,000 Guineas and Oaks.
Nearest to her in the ratings is Moonlight Magic, who has failed to score again in five starts since taking the Leopardstown Derby Trial last May.
4.30 Naas (Athasi Stakes) The Athasi Stakes has gone to three-year-olds (6 out of 9) since 2008. Only 1,000 Guineas entry (English and Irish) Rehana has the rating for it, and she’s fit from a decent effort in the 1,000 trial at Leopardstown.
Elizabeth Browning needed nine runs to get off the mark as a two-year-old and her brother, Johannes Vermeer, didn’t see the track at all in his second season.
Elizabeth Browning drifted like a lonely dog on a raft this morning, right over my betting weir to 18.5.
Diamond Fields beat Elizabeth Browning’s stablemate, Alice Springs, in the Gladness Stakes over today’s CD three weeks back, but has to give a huge weight concession to Rehana, offered around 2-1 this morning.
5.05 Naas (Tetrarch Stakes) A handicapper, Awtaad, won it last year but took the Irish Guineas 19 days later, beating the English Guineas winner, Galileo Gold.
Maybe Pecheurs De Perles, Son Of Rest or True Valour can make a similar transition after first-run-back success.
All three are getting weight from Peace Envoy, winner of the Anglesey and third in the Morny as a juvenile.
But don’t be surprised to see that this big two-year-old has filled out during the winter for his second season.
Peace Envoy’s sire Power, after whom this race is now named, won the Irish Guineas and Peace Envoy’s dam is from the line of the Irish Oaks and King George winner Dahlia.
GODOLPHIN’S DAY: TWO TIMES?
2.25 Saint-Cloud (Prix Du Muguet) Richard Fahey’s Toscanini could be the conductor of this Group-2 prize out of Europe and into Yorkshire. If he doesn’t do it himself, he’ll orchestrate a Goidolphin coup!
Toscanini joined Godolphin (from Mick Halford) as a pacemaker but stayed well to be beaten only a couple of lengths or so in the Doncaster Mile
So which Godolphin will benefit most from his tactics today? Jimmy Two Times, who started the season successfully in a Group 3 here at Saint-Cloud (Attendu third), or Usherette (six wins from eíght starts),a Royal Ascot (Group 2) winner last year but not seen since July.
3.00 Saint-Cloud (Prix Ganay) The spotlight is again on Godolphin in the Ganay, with Eclipse winner Hawkbill (Charlie Appleby) likely to get conditions to suit.
But their other runner, Cloth of Stars (Andre Fabre), has been climbing the ladder this Spring, with a Group-3 win at Saint-cloud, then a Group 2 at Chantilly.
Trying to spoil the Godolphin party is the Aga Khan’s French Derby runner, Zarak, also fighting fit, having won a Group 3 in Dubai.
Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner of last year, Silverware, is also useful when the going is on top, but could do with another quarter of a mile.
