ACHILLE CAN HAVE THEM TO HEEL
4.00 Taunton Philip Hobbs has geared up with Cheltenham in mind, landing seven winners in March already, and with eight runners today at Taunton and Stratford.
Richard Johnson is at Taunton, where he rides Rolling Dylan off the top of this handicap. The handicapper thinks he deserves the weight and he’s four years younger than Regal Flow.
Regal Flow won this last year with a boy on board and went on to Uttoxeter six days later and took the Midlands Grand National at the end of Cheltenham week. But both he and Rolling Dylan have shown no sort of form recently.
While one or both could bounce back, I’m expecting Venetia Williams to go close to winning yet another decent race for us while she’s in form.
She had three winners on Saturday, and has the grey Achille on a hat-trick mission and, though up in trip here, is by Dom Alco, the same sire as a host of high-class winners, like Silviniaco Conti and Grand National winner Neptune Collonges.
Before his 300-day holiday Unioniste had been winning small-field hunter chases and hasn’t taken a contest like this for more than three years, but has a lightweight and may test Achille.
5.40 Taunton It’s always tough defying a penalty in bumpers but that’s built into the prices and I think Miss Honey Ryder can follow up her course and distance success from January.
The form looks above average with the runner-up Early Morning Rain winning next time out at Plumpton and then the fourth horse went on to run a respectable fifth in a much better race at Newbury.
Even with the penalty, she should again account for Crem Fresh who was fifth in the January race and is also having her first start since then.
Of the debutants, Miss Austen looks one of the more likely types but the Hughie Morrison trained mare is almost certain to need further in time based on pedigree.
8.30 Kempton The final UK race before a certain 1.30 at Cheltenham on Tuesday and First Call will prove hard to beat for Ian Williams and Stevie Donohoe.
He was stepped up in trip at Chelmsford last time out and showed improved form to finish second to Arlecchino’s Arc and it’s no surprise to see him up in distance again based on that effort.
That’s pretty good handicap form in the context of this race and back in classified company he should prove hard to beat.
Passing Clouds was an eye-catching fourth here last time out at 25/1 and is another that should be suited by the slightly longer trip.
