FILLIES ARE FINE WINE IN FRANCE: FORTUNE COOKIES favourite filly, Blue Rose Cen, got another big boost from a Group-1 in Paris yesterday, when Sauterne dominated the colts in the Prix du Moulin.

LATER THIS WEEK: Irish Champions weekend at Leopardstown and the Curragh.

ANOTHER BOOST FOR BLUE ROSE CEN

FORTUNE COOKIES: The fillies are still beating the colts in France, with yesterday the turn of Sauterne to tip the bottle.

The Kingman filly nailed odds-on colt Big Rock, who had run second to Arc favourite Ace Impact in the French Derby and to Inspiral in the Jacques Le Marois.

Sauterne is trained by Patrice Cottier, who suddenly ‘arrived’ on the big-race scene last year and landed 87 winners overall.

The defeat of Big Rock was a setback on the day for another rising-star trainer, Christopher Head, yet a big boost for his superfilly Blue Rose Cen, who went clear of Sauterne – third by three lengths – in the French 1,000 Guineas in May.

The third home in yesterday’s race, the Prix Moulin de Longchamp, was Facteur Cheval, who ran up to Paddington, beaten only a length and a half, despite giving away 7lb, in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood last month.

TOMORROW: Cookies for Irish Champions weekend. WEDNESDAY: The top-rated two-year-olds.

MARQUAND POWERING TO 1,000

⭕ 4.20 Windsor All eyes on Tom Marquand at Windsor this afternoon as he bids for career win 1,000. I don’t think he’s had many easier winners than #999 at Brighton yesterday. Lunatick had just one rival to beat in what became a match and it was an armchair ride for Marquand who had seven lengths to spare at the line.

He has no ride in then opener but has strong claims here with Hurricane Power who is out again quickly having been pipped a short head over course and distance last week. I think a repeat performance will be enough to bring about the landmark win and the Cole stable are going well with three winners and three seconds from their last 10 runners.

Fool’s Gold headed the Betdaq Betting Exchange market overnight but was a little weak this morning. The Richard Spencer trained runner is well entered up and made a pleasing debut at Newmarket but was already looking as though he needed another furlong.

INTERCESSOR THE INTELLIGENT NAP

⭕ 5.20 Brighton Intercessor can gain an overdue first success of 2023. He’s been kept busy but without success so far, however he is now 6lb lower in the weights than when narrowly beaten in a class 4 over course and distance in April. This looks significantly less competitive (indeed is a class 5) and the defection of Amathus makes life easier.

Tony Carroll trained runners are always hard to beat at Brighton and he runs the likely danger here in Sir Titan. He just seems in the grip of the handicapper and is without a win since 2021. At the age of nine it’s unlikely we are going to see a burst of sudden improvement.

ANGELS CLEARED FOR TAKE-OFF

⭕ 5.40 Chepstow Flight Of Angels can round off what could be a potentially good day for Charlie Johnston at Chepstow.

Surely a repetition of her latest effort at Epsom should be good enough to land this? She was beaten just a head into third in a better grade class 4 and gets the same ground and distance here. She’s a confirmed front runner and will be hard to peg back.

Daarree is really hard to figure out. He’s probably better than he’s shown but whether the longer trip and first time headgear unlock a first win is debatable and I’d want a bigger price to find out.

I’m more afraid of the progressive Emperor’s Clothes.
