GOOD NIGHT TO MAKE GOOD AFTERNOON
2.30 Catterick A big week of racing in Yorkshire kicks off at Catterick today and Mark Johnston can start Ebor week off with a win here with Good Night Mr Tom.
He looks capable of defying a 7lb penalty for his all the way win at Hamilton earlier this month where he looked to appreciate the give in the ground which he also gets today. It’s officially soft but the sun is out and it could end up being the same good to soft surface that he got at Hamilton.
He was probably value for more than his two length win at Hamilton and it was a step up on his previous effort at York. Further improvement certainly can’t be ruled out on only his fifth racecourse start, and second since being gelded.
Both Infinite Grace and Knightcap have been kept busy and the handicapper should have a good line on them.
Infinite Grace has won twice from seven starts but both victories were on good ground and both also over five furlongs. Whilst she was pitched in at the deep end at Newmarket last time out and that run can be forgiven, it’s a little more concerning to note that her worst run came here at Catterick on soft ground.
Knightcap must enter calculations, mainly for the reason that her trainer Tim Easterby is enjoying a purple patch with 17 winners in the last 14 days.
Knightcap handles give in the ground and looks the danger based on her fifth at Ripon over this trip.
Exclusively was well down the field in the Albany and has run well enough on two subsequent starts in less exalted company but is so far unproven on the ground.
5.35 Catterick It’s very hard to get away from Mauricio who did the column a huge favour when I spotted him as a ‘Hidden Horse’ on his last start.
This is what I said on the 7th August
Not seen on the Flat for more than two years but has been thereabouts over hurdles and fences this year. They want to win this as a confidence booster
He bolted home at 13/2 – so it’s fair to say his confidence has been boosted and a quick follow-up looks very much on the cards here.
The experienced Serena Brotherton is an obvious positive in this grade of race and Mauricio should be even better suited by this 1m 4f trip compared to the 1m 2f at Yarmouth.
8.00 Windsor Zoffee is a warm favourite here to follow up on a course and distance success last time out but could be worth taking on with Tammooz.
Roger Varian’s runner deserves a win for his recent consistency and the eyes are drawn to his close-up third to Ritchie Valens in a competitive Newbury handicap last time out. He was only beaten a neck and a nose and this race looks easier, despite it being a class 4 v class 5 at Newbury.
King Of The Sand is expected to make the running and he can be dangerous on a going day as he proved at Brighton with an astonishing, heavily eased down, 13 length success !
