GEMMA TOPS THE EARLY BIRDS

It’s all (not) happening! The English Flat turf season, only two days old, takes a break until the weekend; well, it was such a slog at Doncaster!

But there are AW midweek and weekend turf meetings, for which you should have logged the stables in form on Town Moor, led by Yorkshire lass, Gemma Tutty.

Former jockey Gemma (31) will literally Look Back Smiling at Doncaster’s Flat launch 2024 after her 17-2 winner of that name in the £75,000 Spring Mile on Saturday was followed by a 10-1 hit, King Of Spain (Rowan Scott) yesterday. Trainers of the 17 winners were:

Gemma Tutty (2), and one each for Ralph Beckett, Karl Burke, Dylan Cunha, Dominic Ffrench-Davis, Scott Dixon, William Haggas, Richard Hughes, Charlie Johnson, Eve Johnson-Houghton, Adrian Nicholls, David O’Meara, James Owen, Ralph Beckett, Roger Varian, and Archie Watson.

The Flat and Jumps converge over Easter before the two Grand Nationals of Liverpool and Fairyhouse, of which more tomorrow:

Friday, March 29 All-weather championships at Newcastle (Tapeta)

Saturday, March 30 Musselburgh (Flat turf): Scottish Sprint Cup, Queens Cup. Haydock hurdles series finals.

Monday, April 1 IRISH GRAND NATIONAL, Fairyhouse

Saturday, April 6 Alleged Stakes (Flat turf), Curragh

Saturday, April 13 AINTREE GRAND NATIONAL, Liverpool

TOMORROW: Daqman chases grand double

MONDAY BLUES

⭕ 2.35 Huntingdon Lightening Mahler was bitterly disappointing last time out when beaten 36 lengths having gone off an odds on favourite at Warwick.

She’s had a wind op subsequently but I don’t really want to be playing at short odds on Betdaq Betting Exchange to find out whether that’s the answer. She was also a little weak in the early betting moves.

A stronger alternative, at better odds, might be the Ben Pauling trained Bluella Bresil who went close in a three-way driving finish at Lingfield last time out and can turn the tables on winner Moonlit Warrior who is seven pounds worse off here with his penalty for a beating of just a nose and a neck.

The pair were split by the runner-up Followango who ran with credit in a better class race at Chepstow next time out giving the form some substance.

CLASSIC FOR VINTAGE RUN

⭕ 3.50 Exeter Classic Maestro has been a model of consistency this season and the winning run over hurdles may not be over just yet.

Trainer Jennie Candlish has switched him back to the smaller obstacles having run a reasonable race on his chasing debut at Lingfield when runner-up to the impressive Doyouknowwhatimean.

Take that run out and he is bidding for a hurdles hat-trick today and to my mind this race has cut up to a match after the defection of Homme D’un Soir.

Standing in the way is Pirates’ Tale who showed improved form to win a maiden hurdle over course and distance here last time out.

That was a reasonable effort and whilst I am sure there is plenty still to come I worry about the starting handicap mark of 113 which is only 4lb lower than the selection who has a much more solid CV of form already in the book.

Now Or Never and Another Folly complete the quartet but both were pulled up on their latest starts and have something to prove against two rivals who are both currently in winning form.

THE WINNING STALL

⭕ 7.30 Newcastle Those at the top of the market are struggling to win and just waiting for ‘their turn’.

A case in point is Mehmo who is not doing a lot wrong but is also not getting a lot of help from the handicapper. You get used to the Mick Appleby stable being in good form the whole year but they’ve just hit a flat spot with one winner from their last 34 runners.

Stallone is a dual course and distance who comes into this on the back of a solid recent run at Southwell.

He stands out as more likely than most, yet was only 5th in the mid-morning market allowing me a WIN 20 attempt.

DAQMAN’S BETS

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
