BALBRIGGAN BULL’S-EYE AT 13.5: The incredible Daqman was in on one of the biggest coups of the year when Balbriggan took the ring apart in the Ladbrokes’ Troytown Chase at Navan yesterday. His 50-point Bull’s-Eye Bet was backed down from 13.5 on BETDAQ to 4-1 favourite.

FREE! BACK-TO-BACK NAPS: The enormous gamble on the front-running grey capped an unbeaten day for Daqman with Free Expression (WON 11-10) landing back-to-back naps after Saturday’s banker, Ballycasey (WON 4-6).

HE LEADS PRICEWISE 110-46: Daqman now goes level with the Pricewise value tips (2-2) for the jumps season, with his overwhelming supremacy in one year 110-46 since the 2013 Hennessy, for which he tipped the 20-1 winner.

THAT’S 10 WEEKEND WINNERS: Weekend-wizard Daqman added two short-odds winners to the Balbriggan bet for a 13-1 Sunday treble, much bigger at BETDAQ prices, of course. It followed six winners on Saturday:

WON 11-10 Fletchers Flyer (Ascot, Saturday)
WON 15-8 Big Hands Harry (Ascot, Saturday)
WON 1-3 The New One (Haydock, Saturday)
WON 1-4 Faugheen (Ascot Hurdle, Saturday)
WON 4-6 Ballycasey (Gowran Park, Saturday banker)
WON 100-30 Silviniaco Conti (Lancashire Chase, Haydock, Saturday)
WON 11-10 Free Expression (Monksfield Hurdle, Navan, Sunday nap)
WON 2-11 Vautour (Navan, Sunday)
WON 4-1 Balbriggan (Ladbrokes’ Troytown Chase, Navan, Sunday)
WON 11-8 Lyrical Theatre (Navan, Sunday)

DAY OF THE TROYTOWN CHASE COUP..

Where do you go from there? That was the last thing on Gordon Elliott’s mind this morning, with yesterday’s Balbriggan coup a case of job done, gamble landed. Now the trainer’s nerves – and the horse – can rest a while.

IN THE RING: Those of us comfortably off with 13.5 on BETDAQ in the morning, at first watched the odds trim (11-1, 10-1, 9-1) with growing delight.
Then came the avalanche (7-1, 13-2, 5-1, 4-1) and we knew we were in on one of the biggest gambles of the year, if not the biggest since the gold rush.

IN THE RACE: Then it’s heart in mouth again, seeing claimer Kevin Sexton, send Balbriggan straight into the lead, a jumping grey ghost, for whom any one of the Navan fences could be an exorcism.
But his gallop was relentless, his fencing superb – apart from skewing one in the straight – and Sexton timed it to perfection, as, ironically, only Pricewise’s selection got near him on the run-in.

IN THE FUTURE: Earlier in the week, I had put Balbriggan up as a horse to follow, naming this Troytown race and his Becher Chase entry – a National horse of the future? – and he also has the Welsh Grand National as a possible target.
It was a great weekend, with The New One, Faugheen and Vautour, setting the standard for the Cheltenham festival. But yesterday saw me wanting to shout from the Tower Of Kells: I told you so! Thanks to all concerned for a fabulous race.

POLLY’S A PEACH AT KEMPTON

A good card this afternoon at Kempton. The Listed Mares Hurdle at 2.10 is the feature race and it looks like it could be a very competitive race.

Polly Peachum and L’Unique are the standout pair in it but you also need to take note of Clara McCloud for the in form Gordon Elliott. Although Polly Peachum is a very short price, she looks like she can vindicate her owners decision not to put her in foal at the end of last season. She was incredibly impressive when winning on her debut run at Wincanton under top weight and in quite soft ground and she will be hard to beat.

L’Unique is always quite consistent and cannot be discounted, with the same that can be said for Clara McCloud but Polly Peachum looks to be improving all the time and she can win this nice prize.

In the race before that, Alerobello looks like he can frank the form of Sunday’s Exeter winner, American Life. Jeremy Scott’s gelding finished fourth at Exeter last time out, beaten just over 2 lengths by American Life who ran away with his race at the same track yesterday. On the basis of that form, it looks like Alerobello has a bit more to give.

At 2.45, the Handicap Chase over two and a half miles and the Cheltenham form of The Young Master comes in once again. Having been franked by Charingworth last week, Balbriggan then won the Troytown Chase yesterday and Lord Landen was running well until falling two out in that race.

Although he appeared to have hit the wall at that stage, Lord Landen drops back in trip to what looks like a more favourable distance having won over this trip last season. On that Cheltenham form, a mark of 106 looks lenient.

Meanwhile, at the other jumps meeting today at Ludlow, Sir Valentino can atone for a disappointing finish to his last run at Chepstow when all but falling four out. He was travelling well at the time and runs today off the same mark. Although this looks competitive for the type of race that it is, Sir Valentino may have a little extra in him.

In the penultimate race at Ludlow, Grand Gigolo is a hopeful choice in a very open looking race. He looks to be quite unexposed at this trip and had a warm up run a couple of weeks back at Chepstow which should have set him up for this one. Although he has a lot of weight on his back, the step up in trip should help considerably.
