DON’T FOLLOW SLOW HORSES..
Give me a half a minute! You know when somebody says that you’re sure to be hanging on the phone or sitting beside a stack of magazines in a waiting-room for what seems more like a month.
A whole bunch of jockeys kept us hanging about yesterday, not entirely their own fault in the heavy ground. It wouldn’t have been so bad but they also insisted on playing tactical games in the mud.
The result in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown (32.6secs slow) was three horses separated by a neck and a short head. Run the race again half a dozen times and you’d get half a dozen different results.
Don’t give up on Saint Roi. Don’t assume that Abacadabras can beat him again. Don’t revise upwards the rating of third horse, Jason The Militant, by an apparent 8-9lb, based on the bare result.
By the end of the day at Punchestown, they ran a handicap hurdle 45.80secs slow. Even that was made to look ‘fast’ alongside the Southern National at Fontwell, won by the mud-loving yard of Venetia Williams: 1min 1.45secs slow. I’ll swear I saw the ambulance men stop for a sandwich.
So forget most of the Sunday form, but don’t forget to remember Put The Kettle On. If you ever feel you’re not getting it right, and it’s all a bit much, think of this horse and her amazing attitude and think of the general attitude towards her.
You and me both can surely beat the blindness of pundits and punters who watched the mare come to the boil in the Arkle trial then allowed her to start 16-1 for the Arkle proper, on the same course, in the same ground in March.
She won in her usual game manner, as she did again yesterday when they ignored her at 3-1 and 5-2 in a field of four until near the ‘off’.
Who could answer the question – and not boggle at the answer – how many times Put The Kettle On has won over fences? Answer: six out of seven!

One winner to forget is Kingswell Theatre; great in the cross-country on Friday, getting sacks of weight from the big-name banks horses, Easysland and Tiger Roll, but will have to meet them at levels from now on.

BOY A BET? OH YES
⭕ 4.40 Wolverhampton It’s all class 5/6 level at Dunstall Park on Monday, except for this class 3 event which stands out on an otherwise modest card.
Hollie Doyle’s season has quite rightly captured the headlines and she re-unites with Archie Watson here with Yes My Boy who bids to make it 3-3 on the all-weather.
His two previous wins have come at Newcastle and Lingfield – also his first two races but he has since failed to convert any of his four runs on the turf (all at today’s class 3 level) to wins and has looked a little high in the weights at 93.
The switch back to the all-weather surface is a positive but also the fact that many of his rivals look out of form and in need of freshening up.
That is certainly the case with Fox Power who is a class dropper and was a winner at this level at Newcastle last April. He’s been beaten double figure distances in his last three starts though when going off at 66/1, 40/1 and 40/1 and we need to see a bit more spark from him.
A bigger danger could come from Habit Rouge who has won two out of three starts and is now in handicap company for the first time. He made all to win at Newcastle last time out but it was only a class 5 and his starting mark of 90 probably factors in a lot of his expected progression.
BENNY TO TURN ON THE TURBO
⭕ 6.00 Kempton Sticking at class 3 level for this six furlong handicap which has taken on a much different look with the defection of my original choice Majaalis who misses the race.
We’ve waited 425 days to see him come back from an impressive win at Yarmouth but the wait goes on!
Jonah Jones heads the BETDAQ Betting Exchange at the time of writing but has no experience of the all-weather. He has been versatile on the turf winning on both soft and good to firm ground but I’d still rather wait to see how he handles the AW.
My original second selection, now promoted to the pick is Benny And The Jets who looks the solid form call after his excellent course and distance second here earlier in the month. He’s been nudged up a pound which looks fair enough – as that effort was in a class 2.
He usually runs well at Kempton and James Doyle rides him for the first time.
COR, IT’S GLEN
⭕ 7.30 Kempton On a low staking Monday the NAP is Glencora here. The staking plan should ensure one winner guarantees a profit on the day so let’s hope that indeed is the case.
Glencora ran a big race at Nottingham last time out suggesting she might well be on the right side of the handicapper. It was her first try over a trip like this so is now no surprise to see trainer David Elsworth edge her up slightly further again given she was doing her best work at the end of the 1m 2f contest at Nottingham.
You can also massively upgrade that effort as she was slowly away at the start and met trouble in running and even though she was beaten five lengths it’s not beyond the realms of probability to suggest that she could even be the proverbial winner without a penalty here!
She had previously run well well when third at Lingfield on the all-weather – doing her best work at the end of the seven furlongs there.
Tonight’s longer trip may well be the key to bring about her first win.
